COMMERCE – Texas A&M-Commerce snapped a seven-match losing streak to the No. 10-ranked Angelo State volleyball team with a 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 25-17) Lone Star Conference win over the Belles on Wednesday at the Lion Field House.
ASU (11-5, 4-3 LSC) has now dropped three consecutive matches for the first time since the 2010 season going into a 2 p.m. match against Tarleton State on Saturday at the Junell Center. ASU was outblocked in the match 13-9 and were limited to a .137 hitting percentage with 25 attacking errors. The Lions (12-3, 3-2 LSC) hit .245 on the night and had 91 digs against the Belles.
"We are struggling to find consistency right now," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "We need to keep at it. The road ahead doesn't get any easier."
Angelo State and A&M-Commerce will meet again on Friday, Oct. 18 in San Angelo.
Shelby Wilt had a season-high 26 digs to lead ASU which finished with 76 digs, while
Maddie Huth had 16 kills and hit .364.
Courtney Bartusiak led the Belles with a .368 hitting percentage and had eight kills and six blocks, while
Maggi Jo Keffury recorded 39 assists and 14 digs.
Haley Bianco,
Leah McWilliams and
Arielle Bond each had five kills in the match with
Katie MacLeay adding 11 digs. Bianco also had 12 digs.
Amy Davault had a match-high 22 kills and hit .333 for the Lions, while Jordan Neal led the A&M-Commerce attack with 51 assists and also supplied 11 digs. Breanne Synder had 23 digs and 11 kills with Kayla Bond providing 12 kills and nine digs.
Angelo State's lone set win came in the second set where it closed out the set on 6-1 run. The set was tied at 19 kills from Bartusiak and Keffury combined with four Lion errors evened the match at 1-1. The Belles were unable to carry little momentum over into the third set and never led in the set. The set was tied at 14 but an 11-1 run by A&M-Commerce ended the set at 25-15. ASU led the must-win fourth set 6-3 before the Lions overtook the set and took their first lead at 10-9. Commerce took the set and the match with a 15-8 run which included a kill from Taryn Driver to end the match.
