SAN ANGELO – West Texas A&M's Dominique Premac scored the game's only goal in the 19th minute of play as the Angelo State soccer team fell 0-1 in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Championship on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (11-5-2) will now have to wait until Monday night when the NCAA Division II postseason announcements are made to see if they receive an at-large bid into the South Central tournament. ASU was ranked No. 5 in the region coming into the weekend and three at-large bids will be given along with the automatic bids for the tournament champions of the LSC, Heartland Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
ASU finished the game against WT with a 10-5 shot advantage, but were unable to answer the early goal from Premac. It was only the third time ASU has been shut out this season and the second time at home.
Sierra Anderson led the Rambelles with four shots in the game, including a late-game header which went just wide of tying the game. Â
"I thought WT did a good job defensively against us today," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "They were pretty direct which kind of surprised us. It was a departure from the way they played us in the regular season. They did enough defensively to keep us from scoring despite us having some good chances. This loss wasn't for a lack of trying or lack of creating chances. But at the end of the day, it comes down to goals and we didn't get the goals we needed to win."
Lauren Perry added two shots with
Jenny Kotowych and
Kelli Regan accounting for the other two shot opportunities.
Dani Edwards finished the game with two saves in goal for the Rambelles.
Premac's second goal of the season was assisted by Jessie Thomas. The Lady Buffs advance to face Midwestern State at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field in the tournament's championship game. MSU advanced with a 3-1 penalty kick win in the first semifinal against Texas A&M-Commerce after the teams went scoreless in regulation and both overtime sessions.
