SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 4 Angelo State softball team will head to Durant, Okla., for the Southeastern Regional Invitational starting tomorrow to play six games against Southern Nazarene, Arkansas-Monticello, Henderson State, Southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas Tech and Northeastern State.
The Rambelles started the season 5-0 after the St. Mary's Invitational.
Morgan Spearman was named tournament most valuable player.
Maddy McGarity,
Sandra Serna and
Lauren Smith were all named to the all-tournament team.
McGarity hit .462 for the weekend and scored four runs while Smith led the team with three doubles.
Spearman leads the teams in home runs (two), RBI's (10), total bases (14) and hits (seven).
Darian Dunn had a good start to her ASU career hitting .500 with six RBI's and three runs scored.
Sandra Serna, the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week, went 3-0 at the St. Mary's Invitational and shut out the No.2 Lubbock Christian (NAIA) in her first start. The junior held teams to a 0.54 earned-run average.
Mary Kate McKay went 2-0 over the weekend pitched 17 innings and striking out seven.
Kacie Brann saw her first action of 2013. Brann, a freshman, pitched three innings earning a save against Texas A&M-International.
The pitching staff for the Rambelles has only allowed nine runs through five games so far this season.
The competition will be tough once again and the first game will be at 10 a.m. against Southern Nazarene. It will be the Crimson Storm's season opener after going 42-18 last year. Southern Nazarene is coached by Tere Webber in her ninth season.
The Rambelles will turn right around at 12 p.m. to face Arkansas Moticello at 12 p.m. The Blossoms are 4-0 on the season and have beat Cameron twice. The two teams faced each other last season with ASU winning 9-6. Alvy Early coaches Arkansas Monticello.
Saturday's games will start at 12 p.m. with Henderson State. The Lady Reddies are 1-5 on the season and are coached by Beth Jackson. The Rambelles defeated Henderson state 5-3 last year.
Tournament host Southeastern Oklahoma State will be the opponent at 2 p.m. The Savage Storm are 3-2 on the season and are coached by Ron Faubion. Southeastern has defeated three LSC rivals in Texas Woman's, Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Southeastern Oklahoma is head coach
Travis Scott's alma mater.
The final two games will start on Sunday at 10 a.m. Arkansas Tech will open its season this weekend at the tournament. The Golden Suns went 16-31 last year and are coached by Kristina McSweeney in her first season.
The final opponent will be Northeastern State at 2 p.m. The River Hawks will open its season as well and are coached by Clay Davis in his first season. Northeastern State was 21-25 last year.
