SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 4 ASU softball team battled weather and two talented teams but came away with wins over Henderson State, 7-2, and Southeastern Oklahoma 4-1 at the Southeastern Regional Invitational on Saturday.
“Two good wins today especially in the conditions that we aren't use to,” head coach
Travis Scott said. “We are use to 70 degree weather in San Angelo and to try and deal with wind and sub 40s it was difficult.”
The second game of the day against Southeastern Oklahoma (6-3) saw
Sandra Serna have another stellar outing.
The junior recorded a season-high nine strikeouts and only gave up one run on five hits through seven innings. It is her fifth win of the season. The only run Serna gave up was a solo shot to Courtney Moore in the sixth inning.
It took the ASU (8-1) bats a few innings to get to SEOU's pitcher Jacee Bennett. The first two runs came in the fourth innings.
Lauren Smith hit a two-out double to bring up
Carly Peters. The sophomore junior hit her second home run of the season to give the Rambelles a 2-0 advantage.
Kacie Easley would provide the runs in the sixth. Easley drove home
Morgan Spearman with a shot to left field for her second home run of the day for a 4-1 advantage.
“The kids played well today,” Scott said. “
Kacie Easley hit two big home runs and
Carly Peters hit a big two-run homer in the second game.”
Angelo State jumped out to a quick lead against Henderson State.
Maddy McGarity reached on a walk and would score on three-straight pass balls.
Morgan Spearman would also score on Smith single after reaching on a single.
The scoring would continue in the second inning as
Lanie Robinson collected her first hit of the day on a single to left field and would later score. Spearman would again score after collecting her second-straight hit of the day.
ASU broke the game open in the fourth inning. Easley hit her first home run of the season to drive in Spearman and
Ambra Hill to extend the Rambelles lead to 7-0. Easley now has 34 career home runs and is five away from tying the ASU career record.
In the circle
Mary Kate McKay would shut down HSU. She only allowed two hits and struck out seven through the first five innings. McKay gave up two runs in the sixth but would induce a pop-up to get out of the inning. It is her third win of the season.
“It was a good team effort today,” Scott said. “We changed the lineup a little bit because we are still trying to experiment with some things and see what works best for us. Both pitchers threw the ball well and it felt good to get out of here with two wins.”
The Rambelles will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Arkansas Tech and wrap up the tournament against Northeastern State at 2 p.m.
