FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Angelo State golf team is in a tie for fourth place after the completion of the two-hour weather delayed first round of the UAFS Lions Classic after shooting a 330 team total on Monday at the par-70 Hardscrabble Country Club.
Abby Bobo led the Rambelles by shooting an 80 (40-40) and finds herself in eighth place going into the final round of the tournament.
Krista Czarnecki shot a 43 on the front-nine and then a 39 on the back-nine to shoot an 82, while
Courtney Rutledge shot an 83 (41-42). Czarnecki is in a tie for 13th with Rutledge in a tie for 16th.
Maury McCormick is in a tie for 22nd with an 85 (43-42) and
Ashley Bartholomew carded an 86 (43-43) and is in a tie for 24th.
“It was brutally cold and windy throughout the day,” ASU coach Kathleen Price said. “Putting was tricky because of the conditions and irrigation on the greens, so you really never knew exactly where the putts were going. I'm extremely proud of the gals for playing through the conditions and putting together solid rounds. They stayed with their swings and didn't let the weather get to them by battling through.”
Bobo, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, is looking for her second top-10 finish of the season after finishing in a tie for fifth at the Concho River Classic earlier this season.
Newman University leads the tournament after shooting a 316, while Oklahoma Christian is in second with a 320 and Dallas Baptist is third with a 325. Northeastern State equaled ASU's 330 in the first round. OCU's Anna Arrese Cortadel leads the tournament after shooting a 4-over 76, while Newman's Linzi Allan and Kiersten-Alt are tied for second after opening rounds of 77.
The nine-team tournament was originally scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Monday, but was pushed back to a shotgun start at 11 a.m. because of weather conditions. Temperatures in Fort Smith were in the mid 30s and lower 40s with strong winds adding to the challenging golf conditions throughout the day. Tuesday's round is once again scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.
“It's going to be another long day tomorrow, but we are ready to get back out there and show what we can do,” Price said. “They are all focused and are looking to finish strong.”
