SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State softball team took the first game of a doubleheader with No. 15 Texas Woman's 9-7, but was unable to win the rubber match falling 8-4 in Denton on Saturday afternoon.
The Rambelles (26-14, 11-7) broke out of an offensive slump with three home runs and nine runs in game one of the doubleheader against Texas Woman's (36-10, 14-4)
The biggest home run of the game came in the top of the eighth inning. Darian Dunn would lead the inning off with a double to right field. The freshman started the scoring for ASU in the game with a three-run home run in the fourth inning.
Amanda Wilhelm came in to pinch hit and advanced Dunn to third with a sacrifice bunt to bring up Kacie Easley. The senior took a pitch to deep left center for her seventh home run of the season and a 9-7 lead for ASU. Easley is now tied with Macy Baker for the ASU career home run record with 39.
Sandra Serna would pitch the eighth inning to close out the 9-7 victory. The junior earned her 17 win of the season pitching four innings and not allowing a run.
The Pioneers took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning with two earned and two unearned runs off of ASU starter Mary Kate McKay. Katie Hines drove three runs in with a double to right center.
ASU responded with four runs in the fourth. Dunn's fourth home run of the season would tie it after Rachel Moore scored on an error. The long ball would show again in the top of fifth inning with a homer by Moore down the left field line that would score Lauren Smith for a 6-4 advantage.
The Pioneers would answer back with three runs in the fifth punctuated with a homer by Katie Hines.
Carly Peters led off the top of the sixth with a single and pinch runner Wilhelm would score on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at seven.
In the series finale the Pioneers scored a run in both the first and second before the Rambelles responded in the third. Easley started the inning off with a double and would score the very next at bat as Smith hit a RBI double. Moore would bring home Smith and would score on a grounder by Lanie Robinson.
Texas Woman's responded with four runs in the third as Jordan Readicker and Lizzy Kelly would both hit home runs to take a 6-3 advantage into the fourth.
ASU would try to battle back after Dunn would score after leading the inning off with a double.
The Pioneers would respond with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-4.
The Rambelles would get three hits in the final three innings. McKay was credited with her ninth loss of the season.
ASU will return to action on Tuesday with a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with Abilene Christian scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
