FORT WORTH – The Angelo State golf team improved by 14 shots from its first round to second and finished the Lone Star Conference Golf Championships in fourth place on Tuesday, while senior
Krista Czarnecki jumped two spots and claimed fifth place after shooting 78-77 – 155 at the par-72 The Golf Club at Champions Circle.
“I don't really think the course played easier today, but I know we played smarter,” ASU coach Kathleen Price said. “It was still windy, but we were focused and played much better golf. We played within ourselves and our team left the course with a smile.”
Czarnecki claimed her first top-10 finish of the season and her best LSC finish in her career with her 11-over-par tournament. The senior from El Paso completed her career at ASU playing 40 tournaments and with top-5 finishes.
“I had a lot of fun out there on the course,” said Czarnecki, who led the entire tournament in par-3 scoring at 1-under-par. “I didn't make as many putts as a I wanted to, but overall I was only one over on the back-9. That side really saved me in this tournament.”
Sophomore
Ashley Bartholomew shot 84-78 –162 for the Rambelles and finished in a tie for 17th. Bartholomew recorded the first top-20 finish of her season and career by cutting the six shots off her first round on Tuesday.
Courtney Rutledge claimed 19th place in the 36-hole tournament after shooting 84-79 – 163, while sophomore
Abby Bobo shot 81-84 – 165 and senior
Maury McCormick an 86-79 – 165 for a tie at 23rd.
The tournament was the 38th and final tournament of McCormick's career at ASU.
“Yesterday the course was tough and mean to me,” McCormick said. “Today was much better because I was focused on relaxing and having fun. To birdie my last hole and finish with a 79 was pretty awesome for me.”
Czarnecki was awarded the fifth place trophy at the awards presentation following the completion of the tournament, while Bobo and Rutledge were honored as LSC All-Academic on Sunday.
Tarleton State was eight shots behind Midwestern State following the first round, but stormed back and won its sixth straight tournament with a 319-297 – 616. Midwestern State took second with a 311-317 – 628, while West Texas A&M was third with a 318-318 – 636. WT's Glory Jangthongsiri won the tournament with a 72-71 – 143 (1-under), while TSU's Isabell Jimenez-Perea finished second with a 73-74 – 147.
