ABILENE, Texas – The Angelo State softball team defeated Abilene Christian 8-3 to sweep its Lone Star Conference series on a chilly Wednesday evening in Abilene.
The Rambelles (31-15, 16-8 LSC) pounded out 12 hits, three being home runs, and saw three different ACU pitchers during the game. The duo of
Sandra Serna and
Mary Kate McKay would hold the Wildcats to three runs with Serna picking up her 20
th win of the season. ASU is now 12-4 on the road and tied for third in conference standings.
Both lineups went scoreless through the first two innings until ASU found its offensive rhythm.
Darian Dunn was the first to strike in the third inning. The freshman hit her fifth home run of the season with a towering shot over the scoreboard in left field. Brittney
Davis would score on one of ACU's four errors to make it 2-0.
ACU would cut the lead half with a Sara Vaughn solo shot off Serna to make it 2-1 after three innings.
Carly Peters and the Rambelles would respond with two runs in the fourth inning. Peters took a ball to deep left center for her fifth home run of the season. A sacrifice fly by Davis would bring home
Lanie Robinson for a 4-1 ASU advantage.
The Wildcats would score another run in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot by Courtney Flanary to close the gap to 4-2.
Two runs would go on the scoreboard again in the top of the fifth with
Rachel Moore and
Lauren Smith both scoring on a
Morgan Spearman single. ACU would score a single run on a Heather Peacock RBI single to cut the Rambelles lead to 6-3.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Rambelles added two more runs. Smith hit ASU's third home run of the game to left center. The senior has now hit five home runs in her last six games. Dunn singled to score Robinson and finished the night three-for-three with two RBI's.
Serna finished the night giving up three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. McKay picked up her second save of the season by holding ACU to only three hits in 2.2 innings.
The Rambelles will conclude its regular season with a three-game LSC series with Texas A&M-Kingsville starting on Friday at 5 p.m.
