Rambelles Sweep Doubleheader from Texas A&M-Kingsville

SAN ANGELO, Texas –
The Angelo State softball team swept the doubleheader from Texas A&M-Kingsville by scoring seven runs in the 10th inning for a 10-3 victory in game one and shutting out the Javelinas in game two, 6-0.

“Great win in game one while getting out of two huge jams,” head coach Travis Scott said after the game. “Mary Kate McKay battled in the circle and some huge defensive plays by Lanie Robinson and Ambra Hill allowed us to win it in the 10th. Sandra (Serna) was solid in game two and Lauren (Smith) continued her hot streak.”

The Rambelles (33-15, 18-8) were out hit 13-10 in game one but would erupt for seven runs in the top of the 10th. Sandra Serna was the highlight of game two. The junior earned her 21st victory of the season and fourth shutout of the year.

In game one, the Rambelles got on the board quick after Lauren Smith scored on a single by Carly Peters. Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-37, 2-24) evened the score with a run in the bottom of the first.

Both teams would be held scoreless in the second and third innings.

Morgan Spearman put ASU on top with her first home run of theday that would score pinch runner Luz'Ce Baca for a 3-1 advantage in the fourth inning.

ASU's starter Mary Kate McKay would continue holding the Javelinas at bay by only allowing one run in the fifth inning. The junior would allow 12 hits on the night.

McKay was pulled after giving up a single to start the seventh inning. Sandra Serna would come in and only see three batters with all three reaching base and giving up the tying run.

With the bases loaded, McKay would re-enter the game and would induce three-straight ground balls to get the Rambelles out of the seventh inning tied at three.

The Javelinas would again threaten in the eighth with a leadoff triple but she was thrown out in a rundown by Kacie Easley and Lanie Robinson.

The Rambelles woke up their offense in the top of the 10th inning. Four hits and two walks would plate seven runs for ASU.

Robinson started the scoring with a two-RBI single that plated Carly Peters and Morgan Spearman. After Ambra Hill scored on a throwing error by the catcher, Smith highlighted the inning with her seventh home run of the season that would score Holly Vanden Bossche. It is her sixth home run in the last seven games.

McKay would earn her 11th win of the season in 10 innings of work only allowing three runs on the night.  

Hill started the scoring for ASU in the third inning of game two. The freshman would double and later score on an error by the
short stop.

Spearman added another run with her second home run of the day to make it 2-0 ASU after four innings.  The junior now has
seven home runs on the season.

Serna would continue to hold the Javelinas at bay with only giving up hits in the first, fourth and sixth innings.
Wilhelm would score in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Easley.

ASU would add three insurance runs in the third with Easley driving in pinch runner Amanda Weaver on a single.  Smith hit a double in the next at-bat that plated Hill and Easley to give the Rambelles the 6-0 victory.

ASU will conclude its series with Texas A&M-Kingsville with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
