Rambelles Score 18 to Sweep Texas A&M-Kingsville

ANGELO, Texas –
The Angelo State softball team pounded out 17 hits in its 18-14 game three win to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville and sweep its Lone Star Conference series on Saturday afternoon.

“We grinded it out today,” head coach Travis Scott said after the game. “It was a struggle but we are fortunate to get the sweep and third place in the Lone Star Conference.”

After being down 10-4 to Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-38, 2-25 LSC) after three innings of play, the Rambelles (34-15, 19-8 LSC) woke up its offense by scoring 14 runs in the final three innings of play.

Morgan Spearman highlighted the offense explosion with a home run in the sixth and seventh inning. It is her third and fourth home runs of the weekend. The junior now has nine on the season.  ASU would record 11 hits and two walks and three hit-by-pitches in the final three innings.

Daran Dunn started the scoring off in the fifth with a double that scored Smith and Spearman. The freshman finished with a game high four RBI's.  Lanie Robinson had a RBI single as did Amanda Wilhelm to close Texas A&M-Kingsville's gap to 10-8.

The Javelinas responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead to 12-8.

In the sixth, Lauren Smith was hit by a pitch and the Javelinas changed pitchers. Spearman welcomed her back to the game by hitting her first homer of the game to right field to score Lauren Smith to tie the game at 10. Rachel Moore followed it up two batters later with a solo shot to center field.  Kacie Easley hit a double to left field for three RBI's and give ASU a 14-12 lead after six.

Mary Kate McKay, pitching in relief for Sandra Serna, held TAMUK scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.

ASU's offense continued in the seventh inning as Spearman led-off a solo shot to right field. The Rambelles would score three more runs to push its lead to 18-12 before Texas A&M-Kingsville scored two in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Javelinas jumped on Sandra Serna early and often with 10 runs being scored in the first three innings.

Serna would allow six runs, five earned, in the third inning alone and be pulled and 2.2 innings of work. Texas A&M-Kingsville had seven hits in the third inning to give the Javelinas a 10-4 lead.

The Rambelles would score their four runs in the second inning with a double by Carly Peters. Moore would drive her home with a single to right center. Dunn stepped up and doubled to plate Moore while Amanda Wilhem kept the inning alive with a triple to center. The senior would score on a wild pitch. After an Ambra Hill walk and Easley single, Smith hit an RBI to put ASU 4-3 before Texas A&M-Kingsville's big inning. 

McKay would earn the victory in four and a third innings of work. She allowed four runs, one earned, and gave up seven hits while striking out eight.

ASU will now play in the Lone Star Conference Championship in Canyon with games starting on Friday.
