No. 23 Rambelles Fall in Pitching Duel to Incarnate Word

SAN ANGELO, Texas – For the second day in a row, Incarnate Word's Whitney Waltrip stifled the No. 23 Angelo State softball team for a 1-0 victory and a Lone Star Conference series win at the ASU Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Waltrip held the Rambelles (25-12, 10-5) to four hits and no runs while striking out nine in six innings of work for her second-straight shutout victory. Briana Sanchez earned the save for the Cardinals (24-16, 8-7) pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sanchez came in after two runners were on in the seventh. Lauren Smith hit a single for her first hit of the game and Carly Peters reached on a walk. Lanie Robinson would reach on an error by the third base before Sanchez sat down the next three batters to secure the win.

Sandra Serna pitched just as well allowing only five hits and two walks. The only run Incarnate Word came in the fourth inning after Ashley Freeman led the inning off with a single. After Freeman was sacrificed Monica Acuna hit a RBI double for the run.

Serna falls to 15-3 on the season and it is the first lost in Lone Star Conference play for the junior.

The Rambelles will travel to Denton, Texas, to face No. 7 Texas Woman's for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
