CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State softball team had its season end in a 12-4 loss to St. Edward's in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship on Sunday afternoon.
The Rambelles (37-18) scored early with four runs in the first four innings but St. Edward's (33-21) was able to get 13 hits and score at least two runs in every inning but the first. The Hilltoppers also took advantage of four untimely ASU errors to score four unearned runs.
The loss ended the careers of six seniors who continued ASU's success in
April Breshears Brittney Davis,
Holly Vanden Bossche,
Kacie Easley,
Lauren Smith, and
Amanda Wilhelm.
Maddy McGarity started the scoring early for ASU scoring from second base on a RBI double from
Lanie Robinson for a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
St. Edward's responded with two unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead at 2-1.
Smith led off the third with a single and
Morgan Spearman stepped up and took a pitch to right field for a two-run home run. ASU went on top 3-2 after the top of third inning. It is Spearman's 10
th home run of the season.
A leadoff triple by Marisa Thome and she would score on a fielder's choice by Kendal Lucas. A sacrifice fly by Faith Roberts would score Lucas and put ahead St. Edward's 4-3 after three innings.
Ambra Hill hit a single with two outs in the fourth inning and would score from first on a single by Easley to tie the game at four.
SEU answered again with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Rambelles tried to answer in the fifth with Spearman and
Carly Peters hitting back-to-back singles. Sarah Debrow (22-10) would strikeout the next two batters and snag a comebacker from Robinson to hold ASU scoreless in the fifth.
The runs continued for the Hilltoppers in the fifth inning. Two hits and error led to three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend SEU's lead to 10-4.
Debrow would strikeout the side in the top of the sixth and St. Edward's would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the run-rule 12-4 victory.
Sandra Serna was credited with the loss and finishes the season at 22-6.
