CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State softball team lived to fight another day with a 4-1 win over No. 7 West Texas A&M and will face St. Edward's for a chance to go to the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional at 1 p.m.
The Rambelles (37-16) were forced into the elimination game with No. 7 West Texas A&M (44-13) after falling to St. Edward's (32-21) 5-3 in the first game of the day. ASU must now win two games against St. Edward's to advance to the NCAA Division II Super Regional next weekend.
ASU was able to get on the board quick in the first inning.
Kacie Easley led off the game getting hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Morgan Spearman drew a walk and
Carly Peters would drive home Easley for a 1-0 ASU lead. Spearman would try to score on Peters' single but was thrown out at the plate.
The offense continued in the second inning.
Lanie Robinson reached on an error by the first baseman and
Ambra Hill moved her to second with a single through the right side.
Easley stepped back to the plate and hit a double of the left field fence that scored Robinson.
Lauren Smith hit a RBI single to score Hill and push the advantage to 3-0.
Darian Dunn made it 4-0 when she hit a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning. It is her third home run of the weekend and eighth of the season.
Sandra Serna went to work against the Lady Buffs holding their potent offense to only four hits and one run all night. The only run was an unearned run in the sixth inning. It is Serna's 22
nd win of the season.
The first game of the day between ASU and St. Edward's started with the Hilltoppers taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. SEU started the inning off hitting a single and would later score on an RBI single.
Spearman would tie it back up for the Rambelles. The junior led the inning off with a double before scoring on an error by the third baseman.
St. Edward's would take the lead back after getting one run off three hits against
Mary Kate McKay to make it 2-0 Hilltoppers.
The Rambelles would use a
Rachel Moore two RBI single that plated Smith and Spearman to pull ahead 3-2 after the top of the sixth inning.
St. Edward's responded with three runs to make it 5-3. ASU would put two runners on and Easley at the plate. Easley hit a shot that the third baseman was able to snag out of the air for the final out of the game.
Sarah Debrow would be credited with her 22
nd victory of the season while McKay picked up her 11
th loss.
The two teams will play at 1 p.m. tomorrow with game two, if necessary, 30 minutes following the end of game one. The game will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call and video will be available courtesy of St. Edward's.
