In the gold bracket, the Belles (6-0) will face the six-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m. (CST) on Saturday at the Regis Fieldhouse with the winner advancing to the tournament's title match at 8 p.m. (CST). The Golden Bears, who are ranked No. 4 in the nation, will come into the match with a 6-1 record following sweeps of Florida Southern and No. 15 Truman State on Friday. It will be the first time ASU and Concordia-St. Paul have met on the volleyball.
"The girls are talking about how exciting the opportunity is and how much fun it's going to be," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "They are really looking forward to it."
The victory over UNK marks the highest ranked team the ASU program has ever beat and the first time it has beat a top-5 opponent since the 1991 team beat No. 5 Central Missouri State in five sets. The Belles are now 6-0 to start a season for the second time in three seasons and for the fourth time in program history.
"That was a huge win for our program, but not the most important match of this weekend," said Waddington following the win over the Lopers. "We're excited about it for sure, but we're gearing up for our next match against Metro State. Hopefully the girls stay level headed and we are only part of the way done with what we are trying to do here. We are happy, but we want to get the next win."
The Belles, who started 15-0 in the 2011 season to establish a program record, kept that focus and swept Metro State on its home court, taking the match (25-21, 25-18, 25-19).
Arielle Bond and
Maddie Huth led ASU with eight kills each, while
Maggi Jo Keffury orchestrated a potent offense with 32 assists. Defensively,
Katie MacLeay had 16 digs with
Shelby Wilt adding 15 and
Kaelen Valdez another 11. ASU limited Metro State to a .217 team hitting percentage in the match, including a .170 hitting percentage in the final set.
"That was a very good win over Metro which is strong offensive team," Waddington said. "They handled the ball really well and did a good job of getting the ball to their pin hitters. They really challenged us defensively and we were able to make digs and transitioned well to score. That was the difference in the match."
Bond established a career high 15 kills to help ASU to a 3-1 (25-20, 11-25, 25-16, 25-16) win over UNK in the first match with Keffury contributing 43 assists and seven digs. Huth had nine kills, seven digs and three blocks in an all-around performance on the court.
Shelby Wilt led ASU with 19 digs, while
Kaelen Valdez had 16 digs and three kills.
Courtney Bartusiak, a freshman from Colorado, led the Belles with five blocks and added eight kills.
"
Haley Bianco played really strong defense and
Katie MacLeay was unbelievable on the right side," Waddington added. "They really turned the tide for us defensively."
Angelo State has a .249 team hitting percentage through the first two matches of the Colorado Premier and has limited its opponents to a .177 percentage. Bond leads the team with 23 kills, while Keffury has 75 assists in the two matches. Wilt is at 34 digs, while Valdez has 27 digs and MacLeay 27. Huth has 17 kills, five blocks and a .260 hitting percentage.
