By Wes Bloomquist  ||  wes.bloomquist@angelo.eduDENTON – Texas Woman's controlled the block and the Angelo State volleyball team committed 13 more errors than the Pioneers in a 3-1 Lone Star Conference loss for the Belles on Friday at the Kitty Magee Arena on Friday.
The Belles (12-4, 6-3 LSC) couldn't overcome the 18-12 block advantage by TWU (11-7, 6-3 LSC) and finished the (25-19, 34-32, 21-25, 25-23) match with 39 errors and a .110 hitting percentage. ASU will look to respond to the defeat in a 2 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at the Lion Field House.
"We played really hard, but not very efficiently," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "It's a tough loss, but there's no time to feel sorry for ourselves. We're going to have to go play hard tomorrow."
Mallory Blauser led the Belles with 21 kills and finished the match with a .213 attacking percentage, while
Abbie Lynn added 18 kills and
Arielle Bond had seven kills.
Shelby Wilt led the defense with 26 digs and also contributed 49 assists from the setter position in the match. Wilt also had four kills and two blocks, while libero
Katie MacLeay provided 21 digs and defensive specialists
Brooke Robertson and
Haley Bianco had14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Zoey Hanrahan led ASU with six blocks and added five kills, while
Klohe Harrion had four blocks and four kills and Lynn added three blocks.
The second set was the longest of ASU's season at 34-32 and saw the Belles stave off four match points before the Pioneers took the 2-0 lead on an attacking error. ASU, which was down 25-24, tied the set at 25 on a Lynn kill and had five set-points of its own. The Belles took a 30-29 lead on a Wilt kill, a 31-30 lead on a Blauser kill and a 32-31 lead on another Blauser kill. TWU kept responding though and ended the extended set with a kill from Pennington and an ASU error by Lynn.
ASU got back in the match with a third set win which saw the team go on an 8-0 run with kills from Hanrahan, Lynn, Harrion and Bond to give the Belles a 13-4 advantage. The third set was at 20-6 on a Bond kill and it ended on another Harrion kill. With the third set in the books, ASU jumped out quick in the fourth set and led 18-8 before TWU made a run which brought the score to 19-16 on an Elizabeth Pennington kill. ASU grabbed a 23-21 lead on a Blauser kill, but four straight points capped by a Hanrahan error ended the set and match.
Pennington led TWU with 17 kills and nine blocks, while Jaqueline Santos provided 12 kills and three blocks and Emily Redwine had nine blocks and seven kills. Redwine led TWU with 44 assists and Morgan Wilson paced the Pioneers with a match-high 33 digs.Â
