Belles host TSU, LCU in final weekend of regular season

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team will host the final two matches of the regular season this weekend with a 7 p.m. Lone Star Conference match on Friday against Tarleton State before playing Lubbock Christian at noon on Saturday in a non-conference contest at the Junell Center.

The Belles (18-6, 10-5 LSC) have won six of their last seven matches entering the weekend and will honor Shelby Wilt and Kailyn Troxell during a Senior Day ceremony prior to Saturday's match. ASU is 10-2 at home this season and will be looking to even its season series against the TexAnns who earned a three-set win over the Belles back on Oct. 3 in Stephenville. This will be the first time ASU and LCU have met this season. ASU and TSU are currently tied in the conference standings in third behind TWU (11-3) and West Texas A&M (14-0). The Lady Buffs have already clinched the LSC championship and will host next week's tournament in Canyon for the second straight season.

The TexAnns enter San Angelo after also winning six of their last seven matches with their loss also coming against West Texas A&M last weekend. TSU is 10-4 away from Stephenville this season, including going 3-1 to start the season at the ASU Kathleen Brasfield Invitational where they beat Arkansas Fort Smith, Western New Mexico and Arkansas-Monticello. The Friday night match against ASU will wrap up the TexAnns regular season.
 
RAMBELLE ROSTER REPORT
Angelo State senior Shelby Wilt has been named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and the seventh in her record-setting career after producing a 94 digs in a three-match week for the Belles. Wilt, who will be playing her final two home matches of her career this weekend at the Junell Center, averaged 8.55 digs per set for the Belles in matches against UTPB, West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico last week. She opened the week with 24 digs in a sweep of UTPB, followed it with a 36-dig performance in a tough five-set loss to the Lady Buffs and then produced 34 digs in a sweep of the Zias last Saturday to finish off the week. A senior captain from Dalhart, Wilt enters the last week of the regular season with 479 digs this season. She leads the LSC with a 5.51 digs per set average this season and is fourth in total digs. ASU's all-time leader, Wilt has 2,341 career digs in 131 matches for the Belles. She earned her first LSC weekly award two weeks ago after recording 21 digs against Cameron and 16 against Midwestern State. Along with her defensive work, Wilt has added 21 service aces and 186 assists this season. She has recorded double-digit dig performances in 23 of 24 matches this season and currently has a career-best with her 5.51 digs per set average. Her previous career-best was 5.23 as a sophomore when she helped lead the Belles to the 2012 LSC championship.

Troxell enters the final weekend of the regular season with 61 career kills and 34 career blocks. A junior from Pampa, Troxell will graduate early and will pursue nursing school opportunities next year. She has played in 47 matches in her career at ASU.

Zoey Hanrahan leads the Angelo State block with 82 blocks this season, including have 17 matches with three or more blocks. She has recorded 13 combined blocks in the past two matches, including a season-high seven blocks last Friday against West Texas A&M. Hanrahan has also supplied 162 kills on the season with four double-digit kill performances with a season-high 14 kills against Midwestern State. She currently has 201 kills and 88 blocks in her career at ASU. Daeleigh Castile is second on the team with 52 blocks this season and has also added 96 kills in her freshman season.

Mallory Blauser and Abbie Lynn lead the offensive attack with Blauser at 333 kills this season and Lynn with 218. Blauser, a sophomore from Round Rock, has recorded 17 double-digit kills matches this season including a season-high 29 against Newman. She has a .206 attacking percentage on the season and has also added 42 blocks. Lynn, a freshman from Amarillo, has 11 double-digit kill performances for the Belles with a season-high 18 kills coming against Texas Woman's. Lynn has a .239 attacking percentage coming into the final weekend of the regular season. Along with the two leaders, ASU is getting offensive production from Arielle Bond who has 100 kills this season and 573 in her career and Cerbi Ritchey who has 75 kills this season and 298 in her career.

On the rise the past two weeks, Brianna Sotello enters this weekend's action with 144 kills and 152 digs in her freshman season. Sotello has recorded six double-digit kill and dig performances for the Belles, including a season-high 20 kills against St. Edward's and 29 digs last Friday against West Texas A&M. Sotello has three matches with 20 or more digs.

From the defensive specialist position, Katie MacLeay has provided 304 digs this season and enters this weekend with 1,086 digs in her career. MacLeay has 15 double-digit dig performances and five matches with 20 or more digs. She established a career-high with 29 digs last Friday against WT. Haley Bianco has added 128 digs this season and has 748 digs in her career, while Kelly Hasbrouck has 156 digs and Brooke Robertson has 108 digs in their freshmen season. Hasbrouck recorded a season-high 20 digs against Texas Woman's and Robertson had a season-high 14 digs against Texas A&M-Commerce. Bianco has six double-digit dig performances this season with season-highs coming into 13-dig performances against TWU and Midwestern State.

Alexa Johnson comes into the final weekend of the regular season with 878 assists and 179 digs from the setter position. A sophomore from Nebraska, Johnson transferred to ASU this season from Lamar University and has been named the LSC Setter of the Week two times. She is coming off a career weekend where she supplied 60 assists last Friday against West Texas A&M and also had 36 in a sweep of ENMU. Johnson has recorded nine double-digit dig performances with a season-high 20 digs coming against St. Edward's. She is averaging 11.40 assists per set.  

Regional Rankings

The Angelo State volleyball team remains at No. 9 in the NCAA Division II South Central regional rankings as the Belles head into the final weekend of the regular season.

"There were no changes from last week to this week throughout the rankings," ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. "There are a couple of matchups this week that could shake some things up and hopefully we'll be able to take advantage of those things."

ASU enters this weekend's play with a 10-2 record at home and is 0-1 against the Texans after suffering a sweep in Stephenville on Oct. 3. The Belles have a 17-6 in-region record and are looking up in the polls to fellow LSC schools No. 5 West Texas A&M, No. 6 TSU and No. 8 Texas Woman's. The Belles split their season series with TWU and earned a four-set win over No. 10 St. Edward's in Austin.
