Mayfield records triple-double to lead Rams to 32-point win over Arlington Baptist

SAN ANGELO – Demario Mayfield became the first Angelo State basketball player to enter the program's record book with a triple-double after going for 14 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds to help lead the Rams to a 99-67 non-conference win over Arlington Baptist on Tuesday at the Junell Center.

The Rams (10-1) had six players score in double-figures in the game, including Marsell Holden who scored a season-high 21 points after matching his season-best with five 3-pointers and going 8 of 13 from the field. Mayfield also had a season-best with his 13 assists and now has a team-leading five games of at least double-double statistics. ASU finished with a season-high 35 assists in the game and is now averaging 91.3 points per game this season.

"My teammates are why I was able to get the triple-double," Mayfield said. "They came out and played a great game and put me in position to score some points and then hit some big shots when I got them the ball. That's my first one in my career, but I know it's because of my teammates."

Angelo State, which led 45-34 at halftime, used an 18-0 run early in the second half to pull away from the Patriots (3-7) who hit six 3-pointers in the first half and finished the game shooting 10 of 30 from beyond the arc against the Rams. ASU owned a 60-24 scoring advantage in the paint and outscored ABC 32-0 on fast-break points.

"You're not going to come out and blow out a team every night," said Holden, who drilled two 3-pointers and a jumper during the 18-0 run. "Arlington Baptist has some ball players on its team and they gave us some trouble there in the first half. They were a great test for us, but we've got a great team here that knew how to handle it. We weren't making all of our shots early on, but our team is unselfish and we kept feeding each other to get better looks that we finally started knocking down. We started off slow, but we finished off strong."

Raijon Kelly scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game after scoring 14 points and also added seven assists and a season-high six rebounds. Chris Jones added 12 points, six assists and four steals for the Rams, while Bilal Richardson scored a season-best with 14 points to go along falling short of a double-double with nine rebounds off the bench. Omari Gudul recorded his second-straight and second overall double-digit scoring performance of the season with 10 points, while DeQuavious Wagner added seven points and three assists. Holden now leads the Rams and the conference with 28 3-pointers this season, while Jones leads the team and conference with 59 assists and 31 steals.

Angelo State is now 7-0 at home this season and 18-2 in the Junell Center over the past two seasons. The Rams finished the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field (40 of 77) and made seven 3-pointers. ASU, which was one steal shy of a season-high after recording 16 steals against ABC, now has a 123-50 steal advantage over its opponent this season. The team also matched a season-high with four blocked shots with Jones, Kelly, Gudul and Thomas Brandsma recording blocked shots.

The Rams, who have matched a season-best five-game winning streak after their 32 point win over Arlington Baptist, return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello at the Junell Center in their final game in 2014. ASU will return from a two-week break with a non-conference game against York College on Saturday, Jan. 3 before opening Lone Star Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 7 against Tarleton State at the Junell Center.
