SAN ANGELO – Marsell Holden hit seven 3-pointers and finished with a season-best 23 points while
Demario Mayfield recorded his sixth double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Angelo State to a commanding 113-74 non-conference win over the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday at the Junell Center.
The Rams (11-1) are now off to the best start in program history through the first 12 games of the season and are on a six-game winning streak as the team goes on a holiday break which will not end until they host York College on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015. ASU, which led by as many as 50 points against UAM (3-5), finished the game shooting 59.4 percent from the field and matched a season-high with 10 3-pointers. The Rams dominated from the beginning, leading the game 16-3 in the early stages and then going into halftime with a 53-34 advantage.
"I really liked our focus and you could tell that our guys did a great job of preparing for the game," said ASU head coach
Chris Beard who is now 30-10 in his two seasons leading the Rams. "The last game before the Christmas break is always a challenging game because of all the distractions, but this team did a great job this week in practice and came out ready to play. I thought it was evident that we were ready to play from the tip and that our team understood how important it was to play well today."
The 113 points were the most scored by an Angelo State team since the 2004 season when the Rams scored 116 against Rhema Bible. The point total ranks ninth all-time just behind a 114-point performance against Schreiner in the 1994 season and was 35 points behind the all-time record of 148 points scored against Dallas Christian in 1994. This year's Rams lead the nation with a 29.4 scoring margin advantage over their opponents and are now shooting 55.6 percent from the field. ASU also improved to 8-0 on the season with the win and is now 19-2 at the Junell Center over the past two seasons.
Holden, who hit 7 of 9 shots from beyond the arc, is now averaging 14.1 points per game this season and leads the Rams and the conference with 35 3-pointers. Holden's seven 3-pointers joins him with six other ASU players who also hit seven in a game and only two behind the all-time record of nine 3-pointers by Kenny Smith against Baptist Bible in the 2003 season. Â Mayfield missed out on his second-straight triple-double of the season after finishing with eight assists to go along with his 17 points and 11 rebounds, while
Raijon Kelly (11 points),
Brentine Taylor (11),
Omari Gudul (10) and
Bilal Richardson (10) accounted for the six Rams in double-figure scoring for the third straight game. Richardson recorded the first double-double of his career by grabbing 12 rebounds to go along with his 10 points, while
Chris Jones had four steals, four assists and eight points for the Rams.
"It's always great to go into the Christmas break with a win like this," Mayfield said. "Arkansas-Monticello is going to a strong team in its conference this season, but we came out ready to play and did what we knew were capable of doing to earn the win. Marsell is an elite shooter and he continued to prove that today. When he's hitting shots like that it really opens up our offense and makes a really dangerous team."
Angelo State finished the game with a 54-30 advantage in the paint and outscored the Weevils 12-2 on fast break points. ASU finished the game with 25 assists and had a 56-36 advantage on the boards. The Rams are now averaging 93.1 points per game and have 263 assists (21.9 per game) and 130 steals (10.8 per game).
The Weevils (3-5) were limited to 32.9 percent shooting by the Rams in the game and went 5 of 22 on 3-pointers. D'Audrio Patton led UAM with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Jamal Peterson added 16 points and Richard Benedyth had 14 points.
ASU, which lost to the Weevils 90-81 last season, scored in the 100s for the third time this season and it was the eighth game the Rams won by 30 or more points. The Rams return to action against York College on Jan. 3 and will then open Lone Star Conference play against Tarleton State on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the Junell Center.
