No. 17 Rambelles Head to Canyon for Woodward WT Invitational Tournament

The No. 17 ranked Angelo State softball team will head to Canyon to play five games at the Woodward WT Invitational Tournament this weekend.

The Rambelles (5-4) will see five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents this weekend including Colorado Mesa, Adams State, Colorado State-Pueblo, Fort Lewis and Metro State.
ASU is coming off a 3-2 weekend at the ASU George McCorkle Classic.

ASU hit six home runs over the weekend with Darian Dunn and Carly Peters both hitting two. Kenedy Urbany and Megan Granado both hit their first career home runs at Angelo State. As a team, the Rambelles stole nine bases, drew 17 walks and hit 27 RBIs. The Rambelles lead the conference in walks (35) stolen bases (29) and triples (2) while also sitting second in RBIs with 49.

Morgan Spearman is tops on the team in average (.500) and hits (13). The All-American has five walks, a .654 slugging percentage and seven stolen bases on the season. The senior hit .333 last weekend and recorded her first triple of the season. Spearman is currently tied for second in hits with 13 while being No. 5 in the LSC in average and on-base percentage.

Micherie Koria had the best weekend with a .500 average. She scored four runs while stealing four bases and recorded four RBIs. The San Diego, Calif., native has a season average of .450 and is second on the team with a .567 on-base percentage. She is the team and LSC leader with nine steals.

Dunn had another productive weekend. The sophomore hit .357 and recorded nine RBIs while setting a career high with walks in a game with two.. The Frisco native scored four runs and hit two home runs. She is ASU's leader in RBIs (13), home runs (3) and slugging percentage (.800).  Dunn is tied for fourth in the LSC with three home runs and third with her 13 RBIs.

Other Rambelles that had productive weekends include Ambra Hill and Rachel Moore. Hill recorded her first hits of the season at the ASU George McCorkle Classic. The sophomore hit .444 during the tournament scored three runs. Moore, a junior from Houston, hit .300 with two runs scored and 1 RBI.

The pitching staff had highlights including a three-hit shutout by senior Sandra Serna. Serna shutout Texas A&M-International on Sunday and held the Dustdevils to three hits. It was her second win of the season. The Albuquerque native is tops in the LSC in runs allowed (9) earned runs allowed (8) and third in earned run average (2.18).

Urbany went 2-0 over the weekend with a 3.23 earned run average. She pitched 17.1 inning and struck out nine. The Helotes native has pitched 28.1 inning this season and is fourth in the LSC in strikeouts with 19. The freshman is 3-1 on the season and holds a 3.95 ERA.

The Rambelles will open the WT Invitational with Colorado Mesa at 11 a.m. on Friday. This will be the season opener for the preseason favorites of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Candace Abrams is in her second season with the Mavericks. CMU returns the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year in Jessica Severinsen, who had a 19-6 record with 123 strikeouts. ASU beat Colorado Mesa in the only other meeting between the two schools in 2005.

The next opponent for ASU will be Adams State at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies are 1-4 on the season under fourth-year head coach Dervin Taylor. Erika Ecsedy is leading Adams State with .455 average while Michelle Leyba has a 0.00 earned-run average in 4.2 innings of work. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

On Saturday, the Rambelles will face Colorado State-Pueblo at 11 a.m. The Thunderwolves are 2-3 on the season under head coach Christie Zinanti. CSU-Pueblo is led by Madison Wolfe, who is hitting .444 on the season and has a 1-1 record in the circle. The Thunderwolves took two from the Rambelles last season but ASU holds the overall series 4-2.

The Skyhawks of Fort Lewis will take on ASU at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Fort Lewis has a 3-2 record on the season under head coach Kira Zeiter. The Skyhawks are led by Destinee DeHerrera who is hitting .533 on the season. Kily Raica is 2-1 with a 3.82 earned run average in the circle. ASU beat Fort Lewis in 2008 and in the only previous meeting between the two schools.

The Rambelles will wrap up the tournament on Sunday at 11 a.m. with Metro State. It will be the season opener for the Roadrunners and head coach Annie Van Wetzinga. Metro State will be led by preseason RMAC selections Kelsey Tillery and Aubree Maul.
