CANYON – The No. 17 Angelo State softball team defeated Colorado Mesa 10-0 in five innings and beat Adams State 9-1 in six innings on the first day of the Woodward WT Invitational in Canyon.
The Rambelles moved to 7-4 on the season with the two run-rule wins. Angelo State racked up 14 hits and 19 runs while the pitching staff only allowed six hits and one unearned run in the two games. Â Â
"We had two great pitching performances and it was a great way to start the tournament," head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "We got back to playing Angelo State softball.
Darian Dunn had a great day driving in a lot of runs with a lot of power. Our mentality was in the right place and we didn't let the weather affect us. If we keep that approach good things are going to happen."
Darian Dunn had the best day at the plate for the Rambelles. The sophomore was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two walks. She scored four runs and recorded nine RBIs on the day. The Frisco native hit one double and the third grand slam of her career. It is the fourth home run of the season for Dunn.
In the circle, all three pitchers saw an appearance.
Sandra Serna limited Colorado Mesa to only two hits through four innings while striking out four and
Mary Kate McKay pitched a scoreless fifth inning and struck out two to end the game.
Kenedy Urbany pitched game two allowing only four hits in six innings of work while striking out three. Â Urbany moved to 5-1 on the season while Serna is now 3-2.
In the first game of the day Dunn started the scoring with an RBI single.
Micherie Koria got ASU's first walk and would steal second before scoring on Dunn's single.
Megan Granado and
Tina Cisneros both walked before Urbany hit a sacrifice fly to put ASU up 2-0 after one inning.
Rachel Moore led off the second with her first home run of the season to left field to extend the lead to 3-0.
Carly Peters would score on a
Morgan Spearman RBI single and Koria would bring home Spearman with a double for a 5-0 lead after two.
The third inning started with a walk by Urbany and an infield single by Moore. After two outs, Spearman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Koria drew a bases loaded walk to bring up Dunn. Dunn hit the third grand slam of her career to extend the ASU lead to 10-0.
Game two had a different start to it for the Rambelles. ASU was held without a hit through three innings of play while Adams State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an error.
The game changed after Koria hit a single to leadoff the fourth inning. After stealing second, Koria would score on a Dunn single. Koria finished the day 3-of-5 with two walks and scored four runs.
Granado walked to bring up Urbany. The freshman put down a squeeze bunt to score Dunn and reached on a fielder's choice to give ASU a 2-1 lead.
The very next at-bat put ASU up 3-1 as Urbany would steal second base and Granado would score on an error by the second baseman.
The fifth started much like the fourth did with a leadoff single but this time by Spearman. The senior would be the only one to score in the inning after a single by Dunn made it 4-1.
Peters led off the sixth getting hit by a pitch and would steal second. Spearman walked and Koria and Dunn hit back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 7-1. Cisneros came to the plate with a runner on third and hit her first home run of the season. The two-run shot to left field ended the game at 9-1.
The Rambelles will return to action with a game against Colorado State-Pueblo at 11 a.m. and Fort Lewis at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Canyon. Â
