LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 11 Angelo State softball team salvaged a series split with Cameron taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader 9-8 in 11 innings and 11-3 in five innings.
"I am excited about the way our team bounced back after two disappointing losses," ASU head coach
Travis Scott said after the games. "It was a grueling weekend and our pitching depth and speed was critical.
Mary Kate McKay threw a gem and it was exciting to watch
Kenedy Urbany win a long tough game. We have a big weekend ahead and look forward to being back at home."
The Rambelles (24-9, 9-3 LSC) first game was the longest game since losing to North Georgia in 11 innings on May 22, 2009. Cameron (19-11, 5-7 LSC) took the lead once in the third inning and tied the game in the fifth, seventh and 10
th innings.
ASU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off
Rachel Moore's seventh home run of the season. After back-to-back-single by
Kenedy Urbany and
Maddy McGarity the duo would score on an error by the shortstop to extend the lead to 4-0 after two innings.
Cameron scored five runs on four hits including a three run home run off Urbany to take a 5-4 lead after three innings.
Micherie Koria started the fifth inning with a single and would score on a pass ball and
Ambra Hill would score on an error by the catcher to retake the lead at 6-5.
The lead was short lived as the Aggies would tie the game at six in the bottom of the fifth.
Tina Cisneros drew a walk in the sixth and would be brought home by a single by Koria to put the Rambelles up 7-6.
Urbany held the Aggies scoreless in the sixth and for the third time in the series ASU took a lead into the seventh inning. Urbany gave up two walks to start the inning and a grounder to the pitcher had runners on second and third. CU's Emily Nix hits a sacrifice fly to tie the game at seven.
The two teams would go scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings. The international tie-breaker rule came into effect I the 10
th inning. Cisneros, with
Megan Granado at second base, hit a grounder to third base that was misplayed and Granado came home to score from second base to put ASU on top 8-7.
Urbany got the first out of the 10
th inning on batter's interference but allowed three straight singles to tie the game at eight and load the bases. The freshman got a grounder to get the force at home and then earned the last out with a grounder to second base to get out of the inning.
Hill had the game-winning hit in the 11
th inning that scored Koria.
Up 9-8 in the bottom of the 11
th, Urbany came back out for the final inning. After walking the leadoff batter, the Helotes native had some help from Granado. The junior catcher caught Tara Martini off second base and threw her out for the first out. Urbany struck out Sonora Zuckerman for the second out and Granado threw down to first base after the strikeout to throw out Kolbee Gray for the final out of the game.
Urbany won her 13
th game of the season and set the school record for most innings pitched with 11.0. She gave up eight runs on 11 hits and faced 50 batters.
The bats came alive for the Rambelles in game two. ASU opened the game with three runs in the first inning.
Darian Dunn hit an RBI single to score Spearman and would steal home on a double steal.
Kelci Garza made it 3-0 with a triple to right field that plated
Rachel Moore.
Spearman would score again along with McGarity in the second inning to make it 5-0 Rambelles on a two RBI single by Dunn.
The Aggies would score one in the bottom off the second off
Mary Kate McKay. The senior would only allow three runs on four hits in her fourth win of the season.
The Rambelles continued to add runs. Cisneros hit an RBI double in the third to extend the lead to 6-1 while two more runs were added in the fourth. Dunn recorded her fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Spearman from third base. Dunn now has 62 RBIs on the season and moves to No. 5 on the ASU all-time single season list.
Hill made the score 8-1 in the fourth scoring on a single by Moore.
Carly Peters and
Katlyn Herzog both hit home runs in the fifth inning to push the deficit to 11-1. Herzog's two-run home run is the first of her career and it is Peters' fourth bomb of the season.
Cameron scored two in the fifth but McKay got a fly ball to center field to enforce the run rule.
The Rambelles return home next weekend to host Midwestern State in a four game Lone Star Conference series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with another doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
