SAN ANGELO – The No. 12 Angelo State softball team swept the season series from No. 24 Midwestern State and moved into first place in the LSC standings.

The Rambelles are 28-9 on the season and 13-3 in conference play. It is the second LSC home series sweep of the season and ASU is now 16-3 at Mayer Field this year. The Mustangs dropped to 23-13 overall and 11-5 in conference play.

History was made in a back and forth game one. Morgan Spearman became the first player in ASU history to hit for the cycle.

The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead after an unearned run in the first. Spearman started the historic day with a single in the first inning and would score on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Moore to tie the game.

Kenedy Urbany put ASU on top with a double to right field and would later score on a bases loaded walk. The Rambelles took a 3-1 lead after one inning.

Spearman led off the second inning with a double to left center and crossed the plate for the second time on an error by the catcher. Megan Granado extended the lead to 5-1 with a single to score Moore.

Midwestern State would cut the score to 5-4 after two home runs from Kelley Schaefer in back-to-back innings.

The Rambelles would load the bases in the fourth and extend their lead to 7-4 after Urbany singled to plate two.

MSU took its second lead of the game at 8-7 with four runs in the fourth. Angelo State responded in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Spearman's solo shot to lead off the fifth would tie the game at 8. It is the senior's seventh home run of the season. Urbany notched her fourth, fifth and sixth RBIs of the game with a three-run home run to put ASU on top 11-8. It is the freshman's seventh home run of the year.

Urbany came in to pitch in the sixth inning and gave up two unearned runs to make it 11-10.

In the bottom of the sixth, Spearman would complete the cycle with a triple down the left field line to score Ambra Hill. Koria put down a squeeze bunt that added a run and Moore would bring home Koria with a double to increase the lead to 14-10.

The Mustangs didn't go away in the top of the seventh scoring three runs to cut the score to 14-13 before Urbany induced a ground to third base to end the game.

Urbany won her 14th game of the season after pitching two innings of relief.

The two teams combined for 17 runs and 16 hits.

ASU turned to Mary Kate McKay to complete the sweep. The senior responded by limiting the Mustangs to five hits and only two runs for her third win in the series.

McKay threw 19 innings during the series only giving up 14 hits and nine runs. The Madill, Okla., native held the Mustangs to a .189 batting average while starting all four games.

The Rambelles bats responded to their senior in the first inning. Spearman reached on a bunt single and would score from first on a double by Koria for an early 1-0 advantage. By scoring, Spearman became the ASU career leader for runs scored with 197 passing Brittney Cargill.
Carly Peters hit a two-run home run, her fifth of the season, to make it 3-0. Koria added another RBi with a single through the right side and would cross the plate of a sacrifice fly by Moore.
