No. 7 Rambelles Set to Face No. 1 West Texas A&M for LSC Conference Championship

The Lone Star Conference Championship will come down to the final series as the No. 7 Angelo State softball team will face No. 1 West Texas A&M in Canyon for a four-game series at Schaeffer Park starting on Friday at 5 p.m. 

The Rambelles are 37-10 overall and 19-4 in the LSC and will try to win the program's seventh LSC title. ASU currently leads the conference in batting average (.373) and stolen bases (1.85 per game) while also being No. 2 nationally in on-base percentage (.465) and slugging percentage (.590). The team is ranked No. 3 nationally in average and scoring (8.49).

No. 1 West Texas A&M enters the game on a 19-game win streak and sits 46-4 overall and 19-4 in the LSC. The Lady Buffs are 25-0 at Schaeffer Park this season. WT is leading the conference in runs (428), hits (471), doubles (104), triples (22), home runs (80), RBIs (384), walks (258), ERA (1.96),shutouts (13) and strikeouts (318). The Lady Buffs are the national leaders in home runs per game (1.63) and on-base percentage (.473).

The LSC Championship and the right to host the conference tournament will be decided with a four-game series. If either team wins three or four games they will have the outright title and host the conference tournament.

If the two teams split they will be co-champions. The right to host will be determined by the head-to-head with the No. 3 seed.  Texas Woman's will need to win one game against Cameron to secure the No. 3 seed for ASU to host the conference tournament. If Cameron sweeps TWU, the Aggies will secure the No. 3 seed and West Texas A&M will host.

ASU will look to bounce back after having its 15-game win streak snapped at Texas A&M-Kingsville. 

Morgan Spearman set the ASU single season record for runs scored with her 69th of the season. She is No. 1 in the LSC and No. 3 nationally scoring 1.47 runs per game. The Kennedale native is one run away from tying the LSC single-season record. She is leading the LSC with a .511 average and .624 on-base percentage. The senior has reached base safely in 40-straight games.

Darian Dunn enters the weekend as the national leader for RBIs in a game with 1.70. She drove in her 80th RBI of the season against St. Edward's that broke the ASU single season record. The sophomore is now only five RBIs away from breaking the LSC single season record of 85. Dunn is hitting .403 on the season with 12 doubles and 13 home runs. She is second on the team with a .745 slugging percentage.

Micherie Koria is No. 3 in the LSC with a .447 batting average. She ranks No. 15 in the nation in hit-by-pitches and No. 8 in on-base percentage at .562. The San Diego native leads the team with 26 stolen bases and 12 sacrifice hits. Koria has scored 51 hits and recorded nine doubles this season.

Ambra Hill is fourth on the team in average with a .381. The speedster has scored 35 runs this season and stole 12 bases. She has set season highs in average, hits (40) and runs scored.  

Megan Granado is currently on an 11-game hitting streak. The junior catcher is hitting .321 on the seasons with 10 doubles and six home runs.

Kenedy Urbany won her 17th game in the circle. She is 17-2 on the season with a 3.28 earned-run average in 26 appearances. The freshman has struck out 69 batters. At the plate, Urbany is hitting .368 with 10 doubles and eight RBIs. She has recorded 42 RBIs and scored 29 runs. She has a .658 slugging clip and has walked 24 times.

Mary Kate McKay moved to 11-3 with a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Madill, Okla., native only allowed three runs while striking out four against TAMUK. She is 11-3 with a team leading ERA of 2.58. The senior is five appearances away from breaking the ASU career record held by Chelsea Nelson.

Sandra Serna is 9-5 on the season with a 3.43 ERA. She is limiting teams to a team low .248 batting average. She has struck out 59 batters in 87.2 innings of work.

Renee Erwin is leading WT with a .476 average. She has scored 60 runs with 17 doubles and 14 home runs. Erwin's 70 hits is tops in the LSC.

The Lady Buffs have a team ERA of 1.96. Rita Hokianga is 21-2 on the season with a 1.86 ERA and is the league leader with 213 strike outs. Hannah Newcomb is 16-2 with a 2.08 ERA while WT's third pitcher, Tori Bayer, is 9-0 with a 1.76 ERA.

The Rambelles hold a 25-15 series advantage with the Lady Buffs. The two teams have split the last 10 meetings with ASU winning three of the last five.

The first doubleheader will be played on Friday starting at 5 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. The games will be broadcasted locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call. West Texas A&M will also provide a free live stream of the game.
