CANYON – The No. 7 Angelo State softball team were swept in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader by No. 1 West Texas A&M at Schaeffer Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Rambelles finish the regular season with a 37-14 record overall and 19-8 in the LSC. ASU will be the No. 2 seed next weekend in the LSC Tournament hosted by West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs end the regular season 50-4 and 23-4 in the LSC.
West Texas A&M jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on the Rambelles in game one. The Lady Buffs scored five in the first and one in the second. Four of the five first innings run came on a grand slam from Mallory Wyatt.
ASU got on the board in the third on a RBI single by
Micherie Koria.
Darian Dunn hit her 15
th home run of the season in the fifth. The three-run blast cut WT's lead to 6-4. With the three RBIs, Dunn broke the Lone Star Conference record for RBIs in a single season. She finished the weekend with 88 RBIs.
The Lady Buffs responded with two runs to extend their lead to 8-4. ASU would be held scoreless in the sixth and WT would add three more runs to make it 11-4 after six.
Morgan Spearman, who went three-for-four on the day, scored in the top of the seventh inning but left two runners on base. West Texas A&M clinched the LSC Championship with the 11-5 win.
All three ASU pitchers saw action in game one with
Mary Kate McKay picking up her fourth loss of the season.
Spearman started out game two with a solo home run for the Rambelles. It is the senior's ninth home run of the season.
Sandra Serna started game two and got out of an early bases loaded jam in the first. The Lady Buffs scored two in the second off Serna to take a 2-1 lead after two innings.
Spearman scored on passed ball in the third after being hit by a pitch to tie the game at two. West Texas A&M retook the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs.
Down 4-2 in the fourth inning,
Rachel Moore hit her third home run of the series and 13
th of the season.
Tina Cisneros kept the inning alive with a walk and pinch runner
Ambra Hill would score on a
Katlyn Herzog sacrifice fly to tie the game at four.
Renee Erwin would hit a home run off Serna in the fifth for the deciding run of the game. Serna was credited with her seventh loss of the season.
It marks the first time this season ASU has lost four-straight games.
The Rambelles will now turn their focus to the LSC Tournament which will begin on Friday.
