No. 11 Rambelles Sweep No. 5 St. Mary's in San Antonio


SAN ANTONIO – The No. 11 Angelo State softball team came back from a 6-1 deficit to scored three runs in the top of the 7th to win game one 7-6 and used the momentum from a one-hit shutout from Mary Kate McKay to sweep a doubleheader from No. 5 St. Mary's on Tuesday evening.

The Rambelles (33-9, 16-3 LSC) extended their season long win streak to 11 games and take the season series with St. Mary's 3-2.  The Rattlers fall to 40-7 on the season.

Morgan Spearman led off the game with a single and would score on a Darian Dunn fielder's choice for a quick 1-0 lead. St. Mary's loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but Kenedy Urbany got two straight grounders to end the inning.

Angelo State's bats went silent getting only two hits through the next four innings. St. Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning. Four more runs came across in the third inning with four hits and two walks for a 6-0 advantage after three innings.

The bats finally woke up in the top of the sixth inning. Megan Granado hit a two RBI double to score Dunn and Urbany. One batter later, Carly Peters drove in Granado with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-4.

Urbany pitched around a jam in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at second and third the freshman got three straight outs to move to the seventh.

Spearman singled to start the seventh. The senior finished the game going three-for-four in game one. She would score on a RBI double by Dunn. Urbany tied the game at 6 with a single to right field and Moore had the game-winning hit with a RBI sacrifice fly to score Dunn.

Urbany, who only allowed two hits after the third inning, struck out the final batter of the game to secure the win. The Helotes native won her 16th game of the season after pitching the complete 7.0 innings. She gave up 10 hits but struck out a caree-high seven batters.

The momentum continued in game two for the Rambelles with one of the team's best pitching performances of the season.

McKay limited the No. 5 team in the nation to one hit which came in the third inning on a single that Ambra Hill just missed throwing out.

The senior only allowed one walk as well through 7.0 innings of work. It is McKay's ninth win of the season

Moore led off the second inning of the game with a single score on a Peters RBI for a 1-0 lead after two innings. Spearman sparked a four run third innings with a double to start the third. The senior has now reached base safely in 25-straight games. Two runs came across before Moore blasted her ninth home run of the season for a 5-0 ASU lead.

Behind some stellar defensive plays from Micherie Koria, McKay held the Rattlers scoreless over the final four innings of play.

The Rambelles will play in their final home series of the regular season this Saturday in a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
