CANYON – The No. 10 Angelo State softball team advanced to its eighth Lone Star Conference Softball Championship final with an 18-5 five inning run-rule victory over Texas Woman's on Friday at Schaeffer Park.
"It was big to jump out with an early lead," head coach
Travis Scott said after the game. "Kenedy (Urbany) had a big strikeout in the second to prevent TWU from getting a big inning. We showed a lot of discipline while also getting some big hits. It was a good win and a good way to bounce back after last week. It is a great way to start the playoffs hopefully we can find a way to win tomorrow and bring home some hardware."
The Rambelles improved to 38-14 with the win after racking up 16 hits and scoring 18 runs through four innings. ASU advances to its first LSC Championship game since 2011 and its eighth since 2002. Texas Woman's dropped to 34-17 with the loss.
Kenedy Urbany started the game in the circle for the Rambelles. The freshman induced a grounder to pitcher and left two TWU runners on in the first.
Micherie Koria started things off with a single for ASU.
Megan Granado drove her home with a single through the right side for the quick 1-0 lead.
Rachel Moore followed with a single to centerfield to score
Darian Dunn. With the bases loaded,
Tina Cisneros hit into a fielder's choice to bring home Granado, and
Carly Peters hit an RBI single to plate Moore for a 4-0 lead after one inning.
TWU answered with one run and were threatening with two runners on base. Urbany struck out TWU's Tealey Farquhar for the third out of the inning to end the threat.
The Rambelles broke the game open in the second inning with nine runs on six hits and three walks. Cisneros highlighted the inning with a three-run home run, her sixth of the season, to make it 8-1. Koria hit a two-RBI single to plate Peters and
Ambra Hill while Spearman added the 12
th run of the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.
Urbany limited the Pioneers to only one hit in the third to keep the score 12-1.
Six more runs came across for the Rambelles in the third. Peters recorded her third hit of the game and added two more RBIs to extend the lead to 14-1. Dunn added her 89
th and 90
th RBIs of the season with a double to plate Spearman and Koria.
In the top of the fourth, TWU added three unearned runs off starter Urbany. The freshman threw 4.0 innings only allowing one earned run to pick up her 18
th win of the season.
Sandra Serna pitched the fifth inning allowing one hit and one run to enforce the run-rule after five innings.
The Rambelles will play tomorrow in the LSC Softball Championship game against the winner of No. 1 West Texas A&M and Cameron at 2 p.m. at Schaeffer Park.
