CANYON – No. 10 Angelo State defeated No. 1 West Texas A&M 5-3 to win the program's sixth Lone Star Conference Softball Tournament Championship at Schaeffer Park and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Rambelles improved to 39-14 on the year and snapped a four-game losing streak to West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs fall to 50-5 on the year while having their 29-game win streak snapped and losing the first time at home all season.
ASU put two runners on in the first inning but failed to take an early lead. West Texas A&M hit back-to-back doubles off
Kenedy Urbany to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Urbany settled into a rhythm after the first keeping the Lady Buffs off the board in the second and third. The freshman only allowed one hit in the two innings.
The Rambelles tied it in the third inning. With
Micherie Koria on first,
Darian Dunn drove a single to center field and slide home to make it 2-1.
Rachel Moore would tie it with an RBI single after the top of the third inning.
Allie Cranfill would give back the lead to WT with a solo home run in the fourth.
Koria ignited the Rambelles offense in the fifth. She led the inning off with a single followed by a walk by Dunn. Moore would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners.
Kelci Garza stepped up as a pinch hitter for Urbany. The senior hit into a fielder's choice but WT would have a throwing error that would score Koria and Dunn to give ASU a 4-3 advatnage.
Tina Cisneros singled off the left field wall to bring home Granado for the 5-3 lead after the top of the fifth.
Urbany, the LSC Tournament most valuable player, would strike out two batters in the sixth as WT would go down in order.
WT would threaten in the seventh with runner on first and second and the leadoff batter Alyssa Lemos at the plate. Urbany would strike out Lemos and set a career high with her seventh strikeout of the game to clinch the victory.
Urbany, named LSC Tournament most valuable player, threw her 13th complete game only allowing six hits and three runs. It is her 19
th win of the season.
Morgan Spearman, Dunn, Cisneros and Moore were all named to the All-LSC Tournament team.
ASU's sixth LSC Tournament Championship is the most by any LSC program. The Rambelles, who were No. 2 in last week's South Central Regional ranking will wait to see if they will host a South Central Regional Championship site. The NCAA Division II selection show will be streamed on NCAA.com at 9 a.m.
