DENTON – The Angelo State women's basketball team lost a Lone Star Conference game to Texas Woman's 68-59 at Kitty Winter Magee Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Belles (5-7, 0-2 LSC) struggled offensively in the first half only scoring 21 points on 33.3-percent from the field. Texas Woman's (10-5, 3-1 LSC) forced 20 ASU turnovers in the game including 12 in the first half. The Pioneers hit 35.1-percent from the field and were able to get to the line 36 times sinking 26 on the night.
ASU was out rebounded 44-36 and TWU won the battle in the paint 28-24. The Belles had out rebounded their last five opponents prior to today's game.
Jasmine Caston led three Belles in double figures with 23 points all in the second half.
Amanda Weaver added 11 points while transfer
Leila Jdily-Ezzad scored a season-high 10 points.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 20-7 lead on ASU over the first nine minutes of the first half.
Diamalises Rivera hit a layup and the Belles woke up scoring nine of the next 12 points. A
Michelle Rosewell free throw capped off the 9-3 run and cut TWU's lead to 23-16 with 4:53 to go in the first half.
Weaver led the Belles at the half with eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
Shauna Coleman added four points and three rebounds in 10 minutes of work.
TWU answered with a 10-5 run to open the second half to take its biggest lead of the game at 40-23 at the 16:52 mark. Jdily-Ezzad stopped the 10-5 run with a layup and was fouled. The junior transfer sunk the free throw. After a TWU layup, Weaver hit her second 3-pointer of the night followed by free throws from Caston. Jdily-Ezzad capped the 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-34 with 13:19 to go in the second half.
The Pioneers responded over the next 1:50 by using the charity stripe to their advantage. TWU made eight free throws that led to a 10-3 run and 52-37 advantage half way through the second half. The Belles found their way to the line as Caston made six free throws during a 12-4 ASU run. The sophomore scored nine of her 23 points during the 3:46 stretch. A 3-pointer by Caston made it 56-49 with 6:11 to go but TWU would outscore the Belles 12-10 to secure the victory.
TWU's Ashley Salazar and Kenesha Saygo each scored 11 points to lead the Pionners. Emily Spector and Erin Maxwell each added nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Belles have a quick turnaround with a matchup against LSC opponent Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday, Jan, 11 at 4 p.m. in Commerce.Â
