SAN ANGELO – Eastern New Mexico overcame a 22-point deficit to take a 65-56 Lone Star Conference win over the Angelo State women's basketball team on Saturday at the Junell Center.
The Belles (5-10, 0-5 LSC) dropped their fifth consecutive game of the season after jumping out to a 12-point halftime lead and then led by 22 with 16:35 remaining in the game. The Zias (6-8, 2-2 LSC) shot 44.7 percent in the second half after being limited to 22.7 percent in the first half. The Belles committed 18 turnovers in the game and struggled by shooting 3 of 24 on 3-pointers in the game.
Diamalises Rivera led the Belles with 14 points on a 6 of 6 shooting performance in the game, while
Amanda Weaver and
Jasmine Caston each had 10 points. The Belles finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field and had a 40-31 rebounding advantage.
The Zias tied the game for the first time in the second half at 46 on a 3-pointer by Tori Tucker and took a 48-46 lead on a Sarah Stinnett jumper with 6:29 remaining in the game. The ENMU lead was at 51-46 before Weaver hit a jumper to make it 51-50 with 3:44 remaining, but the Zias would respond with a Jordyn Cooper 3-pointer and then a Stinnett jumper to take a 56-51 lead.
Weaver led the Belles with eight points and four rebounds at halftime after hitting two 3-pointers, while Caston had six points, four rebounds and three assists. The Belles, who had the 12-point lead after 20 minutes, grabbed the lead with a 26-13 rebounding advantage and also shot 46.2 percent while the Zias struggled with a 22.7 field-goal percentage in the first half.
The Belles will return to action at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Midwestern State at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls before hosting Cameron next Saturday at the Junell Center.Â
