WICHITA FALLS – The Angelo State women's basketball team battled Midwestern State throughout the game before falling late 69-61 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
The Belles (5-11, 0-6 LSC) forced Midwestern State (14-3, 5-2 LSC) into 17 turnovers in the game and shot 46.2-percent from the 3-point line. The Mustangs shot better from the field at 46.5-percent to ASU's 41.5-percent and got to the free throw line 36 times hitting 26 on the night. . Â
Michelle Rosewell scored a career-high 13 points going five for six from the floor and three of four from the 3-point line. The three made 3-pointers is a career high for the senior.
Shauna Coleman also scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Leila Jdily-Ezzad added nine points and
Diamalises Rivera chipped in seven points.
The two teams battled early trading buckets before MSU took a quick 5-2 lead with a three pointer.
KeAnna Kelly hit one of her two 3-pointers on the night to tie the game at five. The Belles would get back-to-back buckets from Coleman and
Amanda Weaver to take a 9-5 advantage at the 16:02 mark of the first half. The Mustangs responded with a 9-3 run to take a 14-12 before
Minja Savic hit a layup to tie the game at 14.
With the game tied at 22, MSU went on a 10-4 run over the final 5:52 of the first half to take a 32-26 lead at the break. Â Kelly and Jdily-Ezzad led the Belles at the half with six points each. The Belles made 41.7-percent from the floor while the Mustangs made 52.2-percent from the floor.
The Belles came out hot in the second half. Rosewell opened the half with a layup and hit a 3-pointer that sparked an 8-4 run to tie the game at 34-33 with 16:33 to go in the second half. The Mustangs answered with a 9-4 run to take a lead of 45-40 at the 8:39 mark.
Up 47-44, the Mustangs used the free throw line to their advantage hitting six free throws during an 11-3 run. Midwestern State extended the lead to 58-47 with 5:30 to play but the Belles continued to battle. Rosewell hit her third 3-pointer of the night to cut it to 58-50 but Midwestern State hit eight free throws in the final 4:59 to secure the win.
Andrea Carter led the Mustangs with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds and Dianna Jones also added 14 points for MSU. Midwestern State won the rebounding battle 37-31.
The Belles will return to the Junell Center on Saturday at 4 p.m. to host Cameron.Â
