Belles Fall to Cameron 80-69 at Home

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's Diamalises Rivera and Amanda Weaver each scored over 20 points for the Angelo State women's basketball team but it wasn't enough as Cameron defeated the Belles 80-69 at the Junell Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles (5-12, 0-7 LSC) shot 34-percent from the field and was able to get to the free throw line 28 times. Cameron (9-7, 6-1 LSC) hit 50-percent from the field and 47-percent from the 3-point line. ASU out rebounded CU 41-39 and received 21 points from the bench.

Rivera's season-high 23 points came on 7 of 11 shooting and nine free throws. It is the first 20-point game of the season for the junior. Weaver scored 22 points with 12 points come from the 3-point line. She led the team with seven rebounds. It is the first time the Belles have had two players score at least 20 points in the same game this season. Shauna Coleman added 15 points and six rebounds in the loss.

The Aggies shot extremely well in the first half connecting on 53.6-percent from the field and 44.4-percent from three. Cameron jumped out to a 10-3 early lead until the Belles answered. Shauna Coleman hit a jumper to spark a 13-9 lead that made it 19-16 Cameron with 10:01 to go in the first half. Coleman, Jdily-Ezzad and Weaver all scored four points each during the run.

CU extended its lead with a 13-2 run including scoring 11 unanswered over a span of 4:51. Cameron's largest lead of 14 came after a three-point play by Jazzmine Robinson. The Aggie guard hit a jumper and was fouled to put CU up 32-18 with 3:10 to go in the first half. The Belles responded by closing the half out on a 10-4 run.  Weaver sunk a 3-pointer and Coleman added five of her 10 first half points during the run to cut the Aggie deficit to 36-28.

The Belles opened the second half on a 9-4 run highlighted by five points from Rivera. ASU held Cameron scoreless for 5:47 second and cut the deficit to 42-37 with 15:51 to play in the second half. Charron Montgomery kept the Aggies in the lead by scoring six points during a 10-7 run that extended CU's lead to 52-42 with 9:51 to go in the second half.

Rivera went back to work for the Belles scoring five-straight points to spark a 14-8 run. Weaver capped the run off with a 3-pointer to bring the score to 63-58 at the 5:22 mark of the second half. It would be the closest the Belles would get as Cameron 13 free throws and outscore ASU 17-11 to secure the victory.

Four Aggies scored in double figures led by Brandi Leal's 18 points. All 18 of Leal's points came from the 3-point line. Jazzmien Robinson scored 17 points with Christina Soriano and Montgomery adding 11 each.

The Belles have a quick turnaround with an exhibition game against Abilene Christian on Monday at 5 p.m. at Moody Coliseum in Abilene.
