Belles Drop Exhibition Game to ACU

ABILENE – The Angelo State women's basketball team dropped an exhibition game 70-55 to Abilene Christian on Monday evening at Moody Coliseum.

The Belles shot 40-percent from the floor and knocked down six 3-pointers. The Wildcats were able to hit nine 3-pointers and out rebounds ASU 38-32. ACU won the battle in the paint 32-20 and receiving 35 points from its bench.

Three Belles scored in double figures led by Shauna Coleman's 15 points. KeAnna Kelly scored 13 points with nine coming from behind the arc and Amanda Weaver chipped in 11 points.  

The two teams battled to start the half exchanging baskets through the first six minutes of the half. A jumper by Leila Jdily-Ezzad gave ASU its first lead of the half at 11-9. The lead wouldn't last long as ACU went on a 10-4 run to take a 19-15 lead at the 11:33 mark of the first half.

The Belles responded with their own 10-2 run with Coleman scoring four points and Kelly adding five to take its largest lead of the game at 25-21 at the 7:19 mark of the first half. ACU answered with a 10-3 run to go up 31-29. Coleman continued to dominate scoring five points over the final three minutes of the first half. The freshman ended the first half with 14 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field but ASU trailed 39-35 at the break.

Weaver opened the second half with one of her three 3-pointers to bring ASU to within one at 39-38. Just three minutes later a Kelly 3-pointer tied the game at 44 with 16:03 to go in the game. The Wildcats used a 16-4 run over the next 5:44 of the second half to build a 60-48 lead on the Belles.

ASU struggled in the second half only sinking 30-percent from the field . Abilene Christian would score 10 of the game's final 17 points to defeat ASU 70-55. The Wildcats scored 22 points off 12 Belle turnovers.

ACU's Sydney Shelstead finished with a double-double with 12 rebounds and a game-high 21 points. Suzzy Dimba recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Whitney West scored 11 points.

The Belles will return to action with a LSC game at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 4 p.m.
