KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team won its first Lone Star Conference game of the season with a 58-45 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon in Kingsville.

Cayla Petree said. "We showed toughness and fight coming back in the second half. I'm really proud of this team."
The Belles (6-12, 1-7 LSC) snapped a seven game losing streak with an explosive second half. ASU made 40.4-percent from the field and held the Javelinas (0-18, 0-8) to a 27.6-percent. Angelo State received 15 points from its bench and hit 17 free throws.Â
Four Belles scored in double figures led by
Diamalises Rivera's 18 points and eight rebounds.
Leila Jdily-Ezzad and
KeAnna Kelly each scored 11 points with
Shauna Coleman adding 10 points. It was Jdily-Ezzad's season high in points. Â
Texas A&M-Kingsville defense held the Belles to just 16 points in the first half. ASU shot 28.6-percent from the field while the Javelinas made 32.1-percent. ASU scored the first basket of the game on a Rivera jump shot. TAMUK would score the next six points before a layup by Coleman stopped the 6-0 run. The Javelinas took an 11-6 advantage but back-to-back ASU baskets cut the lead to 11-10.
The Belles took their second lead of the game at 14-13 on a jumper by
Amanda Weaver with 8:45 to go in the first half. TAMUK took its biggest lead of the first half after a 9-0 run to put the Belles down 22-14. The two teams traded baskets as Texas A&M-Kingsville took a 24-16 lead at the break.
Rivera scored six points in the first half and Kelly grabbed five rebounds.
The Javelinas came out of the break and extended their lead to 10 off the first basket of the half. Free throws by Ashley Viera gave TAMUK its biggest lead at 32-21 with 15:07 to go in the game. Rivera hit two free throws followed by a Kelly three pointer to spark a 9-2 ASU run and cut the deficit to 34-29 with 13:08 to go in the game.
A quick 4-0 run put the Belles down 38-29 at the 11:01 mark of the second half. A three pointer by Kelly sparked the Belles on an 18-6 run. ASU was able to hit nine free throws during the run to take a 47-44 lead with 3:47 to go in the game. The Belles were able to get to the line 22 times in the second half hitting 17 shots.
The Belles would end the game on an 11-1 run to secure their first conference win of the season. ASU limited Texas A&M-Kingsville to just 21 points in the second half on 23.3-percent shooting. The Belles lit up the scoreboard by making 57.1-percent from the floor. The 42 points is tied for the most points scored in a second half this season.
The Javelinas were led by Lauren Jay and Ashley Viera scoring 10 points each. Jay also grabbed eight rebounds.
The Belles will return to the Junell Center for the White-Out Cancer game against West Texas A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. Â
