No. 7 West Texas A&M Too Much for Belles

SAN ANGELO –The Angelo State women's basketball team lost to No.7 West Texas A&M 67-50 at the Junell Center on Wednesday evening.

The Belles (6-13, 1-8 LSC) struggled from the floor only hitting 36-percent including and committed 21 turnovers. The Lady Buffs (17-2, 8-1 LSC) had a sizable advantage in the rebound department at 43-26 with 17 being on the offensive end. WT scored 15 second chance points and received 25 points from its bench.

"There were some really good moments and signs of progress against a really good basketball team," ASU head coach Cayla Petree said. "I have been pleased with our consistent improvement and look forward to Saturday's game."

KeAnna Kelly continued playing like a veteran with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. The freshman hit three 3-pointers and was 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Diamalises Rivera added 14 points and three rebounds.

The Belles stated the game on a 5-2 run as Rivera scored all five of ASU's points to open the game. The Lady Buffs responded with a 15-5 run to take a 17-10 advantage with 10:23 to go in the first half. Kelly and Rivera combined for four points and Leila Jdily-Ezzad added a jumper to cut the deficit to 19-16 at the 8:40 mark.

WT increased its lead to 28-16 with a 9-0 run over the next 2:50 of the game. Kelly had her own run 5-1 to bring the score to within seven at 28-21. The Mansfield native hit a jumper was fouled. Hit the free throw and stole a pass and took it down for a layup.  The Lady Buffs ended the half on an 8-1 run to take a 36-22 lead at the break.

The Lady Buffs scored the first three points of the second half but the Belles received back-to-back jumpers from Kelly and Coleman. Down 46-31, ASU went cold missing eight shots and committing five turnovers while WT went on a 15-1 run to take a 61-32 lead with 5:52 left to play. The Belles didn't quit though responding with an 11-2 run over the next 1:53 to cut the deficit to 63-43. ASU limited WT to just six points over the final 5:29 of the second half and outscored the Lady Buffs 16-6.

Chontiquah White scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Sasha Watson and Ariel Robertson both scored 10 points for the Lady Buffs.

The Belles return to action with a Lone Star Conference road game against Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M. at 3 p.m. CST on Saturday.
