SAN ANGELO, Texas - The No.3 Angelo State soccer came up short to Texas A&M-Commerce falling 2-1 in double overtime in the final regular season home match of hte season on Sunday afternoon.
With the 2-1 loss to TAMUC, Angelo State soccer finished the regular season with a 14-2-1 overall record and an 8-2-0 in the Lone Star Conference. It is the best regular season finish in program history topping last year's record. With the win, TAMUC improved to 11-5-2, 7-1-2 LSC.
"I guess the silver lining is that by losing this game that it hopefully snaps us back into a sharp focus and that we can do well in the conference tournament next week and beyond," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I thought our play was really good overall and our movement off the ball and passing was also really good. Defensively, I thought we did many things right."
Battling through a scoreless first half, ASU came out firing a barrage of shots on goal when in the 73rd minute Haley Mendel picked up a deflected save and slotted the ball on the near post. It is the junior's 10th goal of the season and gave ASU the 1-0 lead with 17 minutes left in the match. However, Texas A&M-Commerce would answer tying the game from 30 yards out with a goal with four minutes left on the game clock.
Despite shots by Elizabeth Rodriguez, Demi Tsambasis, and Analise Watson, the first overtime period would come to a close with the teams still tied at 1-1. It would be in the second overtime period that TAMUC would take advantage of a set piece off a corner kick with a goal coming of a rebound from a Shantel Wittke save.
ASU outshot TAMUC 33-11 and held a 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. A total of 14 different players took a shot for the Belles with Mendel leading the way with six. Rodriguez and Cynthia Andrews each had four shots and Watson, Tiffany Dang, Loni Byers added three shots.
"We are looking to improve our finishing," McCorkle commented on what he would like to see moving into next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament. "Today we finished with 30 shots and only ended up with one goal. We have to do better when we get those chances in the final third and it is just some simple technical stuff. Hopefully, we will get it figured all out this week."
Angelo State will now host the Lone Star Conference tournament which begins on Thursday Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. with Texas Woman's taking on Eastern New Mexico followed by West Texas A&M against Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. in quarterfinal matches. The Rambelles will take on the winner of the WTAMU and MSU match on Friday, Nov. 6 @ 7:30 p.m. in the semifinal.
