SAN ANGELO – The No. 4 Angelo State soccer team lost to West Texas A&M 1-0 in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship on Friday evening at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Belles dropped to 14-3-1 on the season and allowed just their ninth goal of the year. ASU outshot WT 18-12 including 8-5 in the second half. The Lady Buffs improve to 10-9-1 and will face Texas A&M-Commerce in the final of the LSC Tournament Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"I think it was mixed results tonight," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "Our attack has to sort itself out. We have only scored two goals in the last three matches and that is not ASU soccer. I thought our defense did a pretty good job despite letting that goal in. We had chances but we have to figure out if we aren't making our runs in the right place or if we aren't committed when we have chance to make a play. It was frustrating."
The deciding goal came from WT's Lucy Chalgren put a goal in off a loose ball from a save in the 17th minute.
Sierra Anderson and Elizabeth Rodriguez led the Belles with three shots each. Lone Byers, Tiffany Dang, Haley Mendel and Analise Watson added two shots while Demi Tsambasis, Kathleen Keoughan, Lauren Perry and Payton Shlemon took one a piece. Shantel Wittke made seven saves on the night for the defense.
"This result can't be an anchor for us and drag us down," McCorkle said. "We put so much work into making it into the NCAA's and we have to turn it around. We have to make sure we make the most of our next chance."
The Belles will now wait for the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. to see who their next opponent will be. The show will be streamed on NCAA.com.Â
