Rams Finish Texan Tip-off Classic with Strong Performance

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Angelo State Rams basketball rolled the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 106-92 on Saturday afternoon in its final game of the Texan Tip-off Challenge.

The Rams improved to 2-0 on the season with a dominating win over UCCS, which dropped to 1-4 on its year. The win marked Cinco Boone's second win as the head men's basketball coach at ASU.

"It really started on the defensive end of the floor and I think it was our effort and enthusiasm that really pushed us over the top defensively," commented Boone on the team's defense during today win. "It allowed us to be able to get the ball up the court and get some easy baskets in transition. I tell the guys all the time that good defense will lead to good offense and good offense will lead to good defense. I think we had some good back to back possessions today"

Three Rams also continued to top season highs and led the offense with at least 20 points for the game. Forward Stedman Allen led the Rams with 25 total points, four rebounds and three steals on defense. He was 9-for-15 on field goals and hit seven of eight shots from the line.

"I've talked about the strength of our team being our depth, and that it could be any night of the week that we could come out and a different guy could lead us in scoring and on this particular night it was Stedman Allen that answered that call," said Boone. "The match-up that he had tonight was with their top player and we started the game with a play designed for Stedman [Allen] to go right at him and try to draw a foul. It defiantly resulted in getting Stedman's juices flowing and he had a great ball game which propelled us to a great win."

Shelton Boykin followed closely behind with a 24 point showing as well as coming up with three steals and a team second 5 rebounds. Boykin shot 75% from the field draining nine of 12 field goals. Completing the 20 plus point members, Tre Bennett went 12-for-13 from the foul line sinking 22 points overall for the game. He also added four assists, five rebounds and a solo steal to his numbers for the year.

Also contributing the Rams efforts, senior leader Omari Gudul led the squad with seven total rebounds and four assists. The forward also added nine points and a steal. Off the bench Quay King made his presence felt in today's game, shooting 5-for-7 from field scoring 19 points and adding a single steal to the mix.

After a solid free throw performance in Friday afternoon's game against Adam's State, ASU again shot over 80% as a team from the foul line stroking 33-41 free throws for the game.

"After evaluating the guys in the fall, free throw shooting is definitely an area that we have improved in over last year percentage-wise and I hope that it will continue," said Boone on the team's free throw consistency over the last two games.

The squad capitalized on fast breaks and UCCS's turnovers converting 34 points off of turnovers and 22 on fast breaks. The Rams scored first and led throughout the entirety of the game.

The first period started with Angelo State embarking on a 15-4 run that included six points each from Allen and Boykin. The Mountain Lions minimized the Rams lead to the fewest of the first period with a seven point run closing the gap to 15-11. Two key 3-pointers from King would end the UCCS run and set Angelo State off on a course in which it would increase its lead to 20 with 6:11 left in the period. The Rams would enter the half with a 52-31 lead over the Mountain lions.

ASU would protect its sizable lead throughout the second period never allowing UCCS to close the gap less than 10 points. It would also be in this period that the ASU would take its greatest lead over a team this season when a fast break dunk by Allen pushed the Rams lead to a 32 points that ended a 14-2 run. Prince Foster would drop in the last field goal of the game giving the team 106 points for the game. This was the most points scored by the Rams since its 112-81 victory over Eastern New Mexico on January 17, 2015.

Angelo State returns to action in its first home game of the 2015-16 season against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
