Rams Dominate Arlington Baptist 116-46 in Home Opener

SAN ANGELO, Texas – In its home opener the Angelo State men's basketball team dominated Arlington Baptist on Tuesday night with a final score of 116-46.

With the win the Rams remain undefeated on the season with a 3-0 record and improved to 5-0 all-time against Arlington Baptist. The squad etched two new records in the ASU history books with 116 points and a 70 points margin of victory. The Rams tied the record for the sixth most points scored in a regulation game and the 70 point margin is the fourth largest in program history. The loss drops the Patriots to 1-3 on the season.

"It was good to get a win at home and get it started off in the right way," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone on Tuesday's win.

All 10 players suited out received floor time Tuesday night and with 16 points on the board there would be no question that several Rams would produce double digit performances for the first time this season. The Rams marked a season high 34 assists while shooting 57.7% from the field and 65.2% from the foul line. Defensively, the 19 steals also marked a season high for the Rams. The team also added 30 defensive rebounds to the mix.

"One of the things that we were excited about statistically was the 34 assists tonight and that we really shared the basketball," said Boone about his teams play. "At the half we talked about not really playing the scoreboard and not allowing it to get sloppy. The team held them to just 17 second half points and I thought that they did a great job. I loved seeing how many we had in double figures because the scoring got spread out between a bunch of different guys."

Shelton Boykin led the offensive attack with 22 points and three assists. It is his second consecutive game scoring at least 20 points. He also tallied three rebounds and two steals to assist the defense. Stedman Allen followed up with 18 points and tied for a team high with three steals on the night.

Quay King led Angelo State hitting four three 3-pointers, while Prince Foster and Tre Bennett dished out seven assists each. Foster, who got his first start of the year, also tied for the team lead with three steals and added 11 points.

Clearing the boards for the Rams, Thomas Tshikaya (12) and Omari Gudul (10) both chalked up double-digit rebounds. Thomas, who hails from France, added his first career double-double at ASU to his accolades by also dropping in a season high 11 points. Gudul also added six points, four assists, three blocks and a steal to his numbers.

Making his first career appearance for ASU, Napoleon Onyeje Jr. contributed five assists. Shaquan Rhoades was third on the team with 16 points and Gustavs Puhovs added season highs 10 points and five rebounds.

"We always say that the depth of or team is one of our strengths," Boone said. "We played five in and five out in the first half and then in the second half we did more mixing and matching to continue to work on our chemistry and progress."

In the first period the Rams jumped out to an early 26-6 lead with Allen and Boykin leading the majority of the scoring efforts.  Throughout the first period ASU embarked on several extensive runs which included a 15-4 and a 14-2 run. The Rams would enter the half with a 29 point lead and the score sitting at 58-29.

With an 80-40 score early in the second period, the Rams kicked off a 22-4 run that would allow them to mark the second consecutive game this season scoring over 100 points. The Rams defense would hold Arlington Baptist to just 17 points in the second half. Tshikaya closed out the game scoring the final two points with an authoritative dunk that would give ASU the 116-46 victory.

The Rams  will return to action on Friday, November 20 at 7 p.m. against Schreiner University in the second hamge of the Ed Messbarger Classic in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
