SAN ANGELO – The No. 10 Angelo State women's soccer team had its season end in a 1-0 loss to St. Edward's in the second round of the NCAA Division II South Central Tournament.
The Belles end the season 14-4-1 while St. Edward's improves to 14-5-1 and advance to face Dallas Baptist in the regional final next week. ASU was able to outshoot the Hilltoppers 17-11 including 12-3 in the second half but were unable to find the net.
"It was a difficult game," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "The lightning delay gave St. Edward's a chance to make a couple of changes. I thought we came out of the break a little flat but I thought we fought through it. It was a tough goal on a ball served in on the backside and flipped into the side of the net."
A scoreless first half coupled with a lightning delay provided a tense second half. St. Edward's was able to break through in the 58th minute. Jennifer Boudreau hit a header into the net on a ball from Viktoria Malmros for the 1-0 advantage.
It was just the 10th goal allowed by the ASU defense which breaks the single season record for fewest goals.
The Belles received shots from Loni Byers and Ashley Exford that were saved after the SEU goal and shots blocked by SEU from Lauren Perry and Kathleen Keoughan.
Haley Mendel led the team with four shots and two shots on goal. Analise Watson took three while Keoughan, Selena Alvarez, and Sierra Anderson recorded two. Tiffany Dang, Ashley Exford, Byers and Perry each had a shot during the match.
Shantel Wittke finished the game with four saves
It was the final match for seniors Sierra Anderson, Shantel Wittke, Natalie Nielsen and Selena Alvarez.
The Belles finished with the best regular season record in school history and the program's second Lone Star Conference Championship. It is the second time ASU has advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
