No.13 Rams Down Missouri S&T to Finish Thanksgiving Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Remaining undefeated, the No. 13 Angelo State men's basketball took down Missouri S&T, 94-87, to close out its run in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Day Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams improved to 7-0 on the year with the win and 4-0 while playing at neutral venues. With the win Head Coach Cinco Boone joins two others, Ed Messbarger and Fred Rike, in ASU history leading their teams to a 7-0 starting record. ASU excelled in the paint against the Miners, scoring 52 of its 94 total points from inside. The Missouri S&T Miners slid to a 1-5 record on the year with the loss.

"It was kind of a sloppy game but it was our guy's will to win that made the difference," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "Our guys never would relinquish the lead. Every time they got within striking distance we would get a timely stop or a timely bucket. We just found a way to win today and that was a good thing to see in our guys"

Junior Shelton Boykin led the Rams against MSTU recording his first double-double of the season dropping in a team second 16 total points and pulling down a team leading 10 rebounds. The guard also helped to facilitate the offense with a team leading five assist. On defense he recorded a team high three steals and eight defensive rebounds.

"Shelton [Boykin] had a solid game," added Boone. "We knew that they were going to press us and apply pressure the whole game. We were able to get the ball past some of their pressure and it allowed some of our wings to go make some plays. I also though he was also good defensively and was locked in. He taken the challenge of rebounding and did a great job of getting double-figure rebounds for us today. We need that against that Missouri S&T team."

Stedman Allen sunk a team high 23 points on the day. The Bronx native led the squad hitting 10-13 from the field and 3-4 from the foul line. He also added four boards and a steal to his numbers. While three other Rams, Tre Bennett, Omari Gudul and DeVonte' Pratt, tied for the third highest points on the team with nine each.

Gudul and Quay King helped lead the ASU defense. Gudul tallied three blocks for a team high while pulling down 4 defensive rebounds. King was second on the team with six defensive rebounds and also added a steal to the Rams total of five.

ASU shot 50 percent from the field and 87.71 percent from the line in the first half. Down 9-5, Allen got the offense started on a 10-3 run with a pair of free throws. This run also saw a 3-pointer from Bennett and another pair of made free throws by Thomas Tshikaya. Later a Shaquan Rhoades shot from beyond the arch would give the Rams its greatest lead of the afternoon with a score of 38-28. Foster would close out the first half for ASU with some second chance points, sliding in a layup. The team would enter the half with a 46-41 lead.

In the second half ASU improved its field goal percentage to 59.4 and took advantage of the eight offensive rebounds scoring 12 second chance points. With the score 70-67, Gustavs Puhovs and Quay King would make their presence known stroking back to back 3-pointers from beyond the arch to give the Rams its greatest lead of the second half, 76-67. Angelo State would close out the game, 94-87, on a Gudul layup and four made free throws by Bennett and Boykin.
