SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team lost to Tarleton State 68-46 at Wisdom Gym in a Lone Star Conference game on Wednesday night.
The Belles (6-15, 1-10 LSC) were held to a season-lost 46 points after shooting 33.3-percent from the field. Tarleton State (13-8, 6-6 LSC) shot 45.5-percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 39-26. The TexAnns scored 34 points in the paint and added 24 points off 20 ASU turnovers.
KeAnna Kelly led all scorers with 14 points. The freshman was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line.
Diamalises Rivera added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Shauna Coleman chipped in nine points.
ASU jumped out to an 8-5 lead through the first six minutes of the game. A 3-pointer by
Shauna Coleman as the shot clock was running out to give the Belles their biggest lead of the first half at 11-7. Tarleton State responded with a 14-2 run to take a 21-13 advantage with 5:04 to go in the first half. The Belles missed seven shots during the run that lasted 5:16.
Kelly slowed down the TexAnns with a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. The next possession Rivera was fouled on a shot and sank both free throws to bring the deficit to 21-18 with 3:09 in the first half. The TexAnns would outscore the Belles 9-4 over the final 3:09 to take a 30-22 advantage in at the break.
The Belles were held to 36.4-percent from the field in the first half and were outrebounded 19-11. Rivera scored eight points with three rebounds and two assists.
The TexAnns opened the second half on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 37-24 with 16:23 to play in the second half. Down 45-26, the Belles tried to chip away with a 6-2 run. Kelly hit
two free throws followed by a Rivera layup and a
Minja Savic jumper.
Tarleton State continued to knock down jumpers as the TexAnns hit 44.4-percent from the field in the second half. TSU took its biggest lead of the game at 61-36 at the 6:39 mark with a 12-4 run. The Belles refused to quit with a late 9-3 run to make it 64-45 with 1:39 to go before the final of 68-46.
A total of 13 Tarleton State players scored a point with Kathy Thomas leading the way with 12 points.
The Belles will host a pair of Lone Star Conference games on Saturday and Sunday at the Junell Center. Texas Woman's will come to town on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Â
