Belles Take Down Texas Woman's 64-58

SAN ANGELO - Angelo State's KeAnna Kelly scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Belle basketball team to a 64-58 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas Woman's at the Junell Center on Saturday afternoon.

"I was extremely proud of the way this team played," ASU head women's basketball coach Cayla Petree said. "We got contributions from everybody on the team and we kept fighting to pull out the victory."

The Belles (7-15, 2-10 LSC) held TWU (13-11, 6-7 LSC) to just 33.9-percent from the field and 10-percent from the 3-point line. ASU made 48.1-percent of its shots from the field and 5-of-9 from the 3-point line in the second half after being held to 27.6-percent from the field in the first half.

Kelly led all scorers with 23 points including 17 in the second half. The freshman went 8-for-9 from the free throw line with two assists and two steals. Diamalises Rivera added 14 points and three rebounds. A total of nine Belles scored on the day. Shauna Coleman and Minja Savic led the rebounding with seven each.

The Pioneers started the game on an 11-4 run through the first six minutes of the game. ASU missed seven of its first eight shots of the game. Savic responded with a jumper at the 12:45 mark to spark a 12-5 Belle run to tie the game at 16 with 7:05 to go in the first half.  Coleman and Kelly both scored four points each during the run.

TWU would score the next seven points to retake the lead at 23-16 before Rivera hit a jumper at 4:11 to cut the deficit to 23-18. A jumper by Amanda Weaver followed by a Leila Jdily-Ezzad free throw and Coleman layup brought the score to 25-23 with 1:44 to go in the first half. Texas Woman's would take a 29-25 lead at the break after scoring four of the final six points of the half.

Rivera and Kelly each scored six points in the first half while Coleman added five points. The Belles failed to hit a 3-pointer in the first half and were out rebounded 24-23.

The Belles came out of the second half with a bang. Kelly opened the half up with a 3-pointer to start a 14-4 run to give ASU its biggest lead of the game at 39-33 at the 16:02 mark of the second half. Kelly, a freshman, scored seven points and Rivera added five.

The Pioneers would tie it up at 44 at the 8:58 mark after an 11-5 run that covered 6:19 on the clock. Rivera hit a free throw and TWU answered with a 3-pointer. Kelly put ASU up 48-47 with her own 3-pointer and TWU missed its next shot. Keva Raiford grabbed the rebound and found Shanna Taylor for a 3-pointer to put ASU up 51-47.

The Belles used the momentum for a 12-4 run to take a 57-51 advantage with 3:43 to go in the game. Michelle Rosewell capped it off by driving by her defender for a layup. The Pioneer would tie the game up at 58 with 1:57.

TWU fouled Kelly to put her on the line and the freshman sunk both free throws for a 60-58 lead with 40 seconds to play. The Pioneers missed a jumper and were forced to foul again. Kelly again was put to the free throw line and made it a four-point game at 62-48 with both free throws. A Texas Woman's turnover on the ensuing drive secured the game and Raiford hit a layup as time expired for the final 64-58 score.

TWU was led by Kenesha Saygo's scored 17 points while Danielle Westerifeld added 13 points.

The Rambelles will have a quick turnaround as Texas A&M-Commerce comes to the Junell Center tomorrow at 4 p.m. The game will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA.
