SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team came up just short against Texas A&M-Commerce 67-62 at the Junell Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Belles (7-16, 2-11 LSC) was held to 36.1-percent shooting from the field and 23.8-percent from the 3-point line. ASU attempted 21 three pointers which is the second most this season. The Lions (13-9, 7-5 LSC) made 46.4-percent from the field and outscored ASU 38-28 in the paint. TAMUC also outscored the Belles 10-2 in fast break points and 18-13 in bench points.
Diamalises Rivera led three Belles in double figures with 18 points.
Leila Jdily-Ezzad and
Elaine Herrera both scored career highs with 11 points.
Shauna Coleman scored nine points but tied her career high with 10 rebounds.
The two teams traded opening baskets through the first three minutes until Coleman hit back-to-back jumpers to put ASU up 9-4 with 15:33 to play in the first half. Texas A&M-Commerce responded with an 11-4 run over the next 2:42 on the clock to take a 15-13 advantage. A Rivera jumper at the 11:27 mark tied the game at 15. Coleman was fouled on ASU's next possession and proceeded to hit one of two free throws to put the Belles up 16-15.
The Lions retook the lead at 19-17 and built a 24-19 lead with 4:41 to play on a 9-3 run. Jdily-Ezzad hit a layup to cut the deficit to three and two free throws followed by a jumper from Rivera gave ASU a 25-24 lead. TAMUC hit a jumper and Coleman responded with a basket to make it 27-26 with a 1:49 to go in the first half. The Lions ended the half on a 4-0 run to take a 30-27 lead in at the break.
Rivera scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and all nine of Coleman's points were scored in the first half.
TAMUC scored the first four point of the second half before a
KeAnna Kelly 3-pointer cut the lead to 34-30 at the 18:22 mark of the second half. The three pointer sparked a 7-2 run as Herrera hit one of her three 3-pointers to bring the deficit to 36-34. Herrera would hit another 3-pointer to put ASU up 41-38 with 13:28 to play.
The Lions had one of their biggest runs of the game over the next 4:36. TAMUC built nine point lead, the biggest of the game, with a 14-2 at the 8:31 mark of the second half. The Belles would chip away with a 12-5 run over the next 4:19. Kelly hit a 3-pointer to make it 56-55 Texas A&M-Commerce with just 4:12 to play.
Back-to-back Lion jumpers made it a five point game and
Michelle Rosewell drove by her defender for a layup to bring the score to within three at 60-57. TAMUC would secure the victory over the final 1:23 with free throws. The Lions would hit seven of eight free throws to halt the Belles comeback bid.
Three Lions scored in double figures led by Princess Davis' 16 points. Artaejah Gay added 13 and Gabby Scott chipped in 11.
The Belles will host Midwestern State on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Junell Center.
