No. 6 Rambelles Host Texas A&M-Kingsville for LSC Opener

SAN ANGELO – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team will host Texas A&M-Kingsville to open Lone Star Conference play on Saturday at Mayer Field with first pitch scheduled at 3 p.m.

The Rambelles will hit the field for the first time since the WT Woodward Classic. ASU is 11-1 on the season and 6-0 at Mayer Field. Over the last two seasons at Mayer Field, Angelo State has a record of 29-5.

Texas A&M-Kingsville bring a record of 6-5 on the season and have won their last three games. The Javelinas are coached by Besty Dean in her first year at TAMUK. Arlana Munoz and Corinne Crassell are leading the team with .500 averages on the season and Carlie Clark in not far behind with a .467 average. Clark is also the top pitcher on the staff with a 2-1 record and a 2.05 earned-run average. Karrie Smith has the most experience this season with 35.2 innings pitched. She is 3-2 on the season and has thrown five complete games.

Pitching has been stellar so far this season. The duo of Kenedy Urbany and Brandy Marlett has only allowed a combined 20 runs of which only nine are earned runs. As a staff, ASU has a 0.82 earned-run average that is the best in the LSC. Urbany is 6-0 on the season with a 1.27 ERA. She has four complete games, two shutouts and has held opponents to just two hits in back-to-back games. The sophomore is tops in the LSC by holding opponents to a .168 batting average. Marlett is 5-1 on the season with a save. She is the LSC leader with a 0.49 ERA and is also tops in earned runs allowed with three. She is tied for second with 40 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .179 batting average.

The offense is the best in the LSC this season with a .395 team batting average and a .474 on-base percentage. Three Rambelles are currently in the top five in average.

Madison Greenwell is No. 2 in the LSC with a .529 batting average. The freshman has recorded a team-high 18 hits and scored 13 runs. She has two doubles, two triples and seven RBIs with a .543 on-base percentage. She is second on the team in stolen bases with eight and is third on the team with a .706 slugging percentage.

Micherie Koria's average of .517 is currently No. 3 in the LSC. She is tops in the league in sacrifice hits with seven and third in on-base percentage at .576. The San Diego native leads ASU with 10 stolen bases and had reached base safely in 12-straight games. She has six games of at least two hits this season.

The LSC leader in on-base percentage is Rachel Moore. The senior has an on-base clip of .590 and is fourth in the league with a .515 average. She is second on the team with 17 hits and has the most doubles with four. She is second on the team with 12 RBIs and has a slugging percentage of .818. The Katy native is currently on an eight game hitting streak.

Ambra Hill has used her speed to her advantage. The slapper is hitting .444 and scored nine runs this season. She is a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases. The junior is second on the team with a .743 slugging percentage and has a .524 on-base percentage.

Urbany is fifth on the team with a .429 average. The sophomore leads the team with 13 RBIs and tied with Moore for the lead with two home runs.  The Helotes native recorded a season-high five RBIs in the win over Colorado Mesa.

Lanie Robinson is having a good start to the season. The junior is hitting .400 with six hits and two runs scored. She has recorded one double and drew two walks on the season in just 15 at-bats. The Hitchcock native has started seven games this season.

Megan Granado has shown plat discipline as she leads ASU with eight walks. She has an on-base percentage of .486 and is hitting .346 on the season. The senior has hit four doubles while recording three RBIs and scoring four runs.

Ciara Sheppard has started all 12 games at shortstop this season. The freshman is hitting .235 is 17 plate appearances. She has four hits with one double and scored four runs.

Darian Dunn is third on the team with nine RBIs this season. The junior has recorded seven hits but is only hitting .233. She is the team leader with three multi-RBI games.

The Rambelles bench has been productive early on this season. The group of Amber Rendon, Lauryn Donnelly, Katlyn Herzog, Camry Weinheimer, Kelly Johnson, Brooke Mangold and Kylie Love has recorded 18 hits with four home runs and 19 RBIs. Weinheimer has started in five games this season and has two doubles and eight RBIs. Johnson is tied for the team lead with two home runs and has hit the only grand slam of the season.

ASU will wrap up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader set to start at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Mayer Field.
