Belles Fall Late to ENMU 77-69

PORTALES, N.M. – The Angelo State women's basketball team fell late to Eastern New Mexico 77-69 in Portales, N.M., on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles (6-14, 1-9 LSC) were unable to slow down the Zias (7-15 ,4-6 LSC) in the second half. ENMU scored 23 fast break points and outscored ASU 47-32. Angelo State won the battle in the paint 34-28 but was out rebounded 40-34.

Three Belles scored in double figures led by Diamalises Rivera's 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting. KeAnna Kelly scored in double figures for the third-straight game with 17 and Amanda Weaver added 15 points and seven rebounds.

ASU shot lights out in the first half hitting 52.0-percent from the field. The Belles were up 6-2 and Rivera and Weaver combined to score the first six ASU points. The Zias held ASU scores over the next 2:11 and build an 11-6 advantage at the 13:25 mark of the first half.

Leila Jdily-Ezzad hit a free throw with the Belles down 16-11 at 11:15 in the first half that sparked a 14-2 run. ASU got to the line and made 7-of-8 combined to take the lead back at 25-18. ENMU's Sarah Stinnett kept the Zias close in the first half scoring 11 points. She scored five-straight points to bring ENMU within four at 27-23 with 4:28 to go in the first half. Kelly and Rivera combined for eight points in a 10-2 run over a span of 2:31 to extend ASU's lead to 37-28. ASU took a 37-30 lead in at the break while limiting ENMU to just 36.7-percent shooting in the first half.

ASU started the second half on a 10-5 run in part to two 3-pointers by Kelly. A jumper by Rivera gave the Belles its biggest lead of the game at 47-37. ENMU and mostly Stinnett would answer with a 19-5 run over the next 7:27. Stinnett scored 13 of the 19 points to give ENMU on top 56-52.

The Belles were held scoreless for 4:52 before Weaver scored five-straight points to trim ENMU's lead to 57-56 with 5:36 to play. After the two teams traded baskets, the Zias would score seven of the next nine points for a 67-61 advantage with 1:47 to play. Rivera put in a layup to bring it to within five at 69-64 but Stinnett was fouled on a 3-point attempt and sunk all three shot. Michelle Rosewell responded with a 3-pointer of her own but ENMU sunk five free throws during the last minute of play to finish the 77-69 comeback.

Stinnett recorded a double-double with a game-high 37 points and 10 rebounds. Tori Tucker scoed 11 points for ENMU in the win. The Zias shot 52-percent in the second half and 43.6-percent for the game.

ASU will face another road test on Wednesday, Feb. 11 against Tarleton State in Stephenville with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
