Tyner's walk-off double lifts Rams to 4-3 win over McMurry

SAN ANGELO – Derek Tyner laced a shot to the center field wall to score Cameron Massengill from third and David Goggin from first to propel Angelo State to a 4-3 walk-off win over McMurry on Monday in the final non-conference game of the season for the Rams at Foster Field.

The Rams (29-14) wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule and are now 19-4 at home going into a weekend series against Texas A&M-Kingsville which starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Foster Field before a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. ASU earned a season-series win over the War Hawks (27-9), taking two of three meetings after the two teams split a doubleheader back on February 2nd in Abilene.

"This win showed a lot of heart and determination and really what this group is all about," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "We are a group of winners and we never give up. We have had some tough ones lately that have gotten away for us, so to go get this one in the way we did could give us some good momentum."

Tyner, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning, drove in the game-winning runs after the Rams had seen a 2-1 lead erased with McMurry scoring one run in the top of the seventh and another in the eighth to take the lead. Massengill led off the inning with a double to left-center field and Goggin would put runners on the corners with a single through right-side of the infield. On a 1-0 count, Tyner drilled a pitch over the center fielder's head and Goggin would race around the bases to score standing up for the second walk-off win this season at Foster Field.

"We definitely needed a win like this going into the next two series," Tyner said. "We couldn't let this one get away. My heart is still racing because I really wanted to get it done. It feels really good to come through for your team."

Dillon Becker (5-2) picked up the win after throwing two innings of relief where he had four strikeouts and limited the War Hawks to one hit and one run. McMurry took the lead on Becker in the eighth, but he threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts to set the Rams up for the dramatics in the bottom of the inning. Becker finished off the game after Matt Shannon had four strikeouts in a three-inning start where he allowed only run and three hits, while Paxton DeLaGarza recorded four strikeouts in four innings of relief. ASU's leading hitter and everyday shortstop, DeLaGarza made his second appearance on the mound and now has six strikeouts in four innings of relief.

"We know how valuable Paxton could be for us from the bullpen, but he's such a great shortstop that you also want him in the field throughout the game," Brooks said. "We tried it tonight and he did a great job and it may be something that we revisit in certain situations."

Nehwon Norkeh scored the first ASU run of the game in the third inning by stealing home after reaching on a walk. Norkeh, who reached on a walk, advanced to second on fielder's choice and then to third on a passed ball. After a J.C. Snyder walk to load the bases, Brooks sent Norkeh home on the first pitch of a Brett David at-bat and he slide in safely for the first steal of home for the Rams this season. ASU tacked on its second run in the fourth with Hunter Spear delivering a sacrifice fly to right field to score Massengill who had led off the inning with a single to left field.

Massengill, Snyder and Cody Semler each had two hits in the game for the Rams who had 10 total hits against the War Hawks. Snyder went 2-for-3, including hitting his conference-leading 17th double of the season.

Brooks and the program have now won 398 games since the program started in 2005 going into a three-game set this weekend against Texas A&M-Kingsville before they close out the regular-season by hosting Eastern New Mexico next weekend at Foster Field.

"It's important for us to remain focused and work on the little things to get better," Brooks said. "We have some really big games coming up. We are swinging the bats pretty well right now and we just have to figure out how to score a little more. Our team feels pretty good when we score three runs or more because of the strength of our pitching."
