No. 17 Belles Defeat St. Mary's 3-2

SAN ANTONIO – The No. 17 Angelo State soccer team won its third straight match on the road with a 3-2 win over St. Mary's at Sigma Beta Chi Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Belles (4-0-1) continued its strong start in the first half with two goals and eight shots in the first half. ASU totaled 15 shots in the match while limiting the Rattlers (2-2-0) to seven total shots.

"I thought we were a little bit tired," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "We have traveled a lot over the last two and a half weeks. I told the girls I would take any win after all the travel. It wasn't our best performance but it was a win today."

Loni Byers put the Belles up quick with her first goal of the season. The sophomore took a pass from Sierra Anderson and took a shot from 15 yards out. The ball sailed in to the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead at the four minute mark of the first half. With the assist, Anderson moves into fifth on the ASU career point list with 56.

"I thought our attack was good," McCorkle said. "I thought Loni (Byers) did a great job on the first goal and she actually could have got the second one as well and just missed over the goal.  It was a good start for her."

St. Mary's broke ASU's shutout streak of 316 minutes at the 18 minute mark with a goal from Kristal Williams to tie the match at one.

ASU was able to take the lead right before half on a breakaway. Haley Mendel dribbled between two players and beat St. Mary's goalkeep Alyssa Taramona for a 2-1 lead going into the break. Mendel's third goal of the season is tops on the team.

"Haley (Mendel) was in and had a clean breakaway where she split to the two center backs and went right to goal," McCorkle said. "It was a technical finish from her."

After the break, Demi Tsambasis made it 3-1 on a ball from Anderson  and tapped it in from eight yards out. It is the second goal of Tsambasis' career at Angelo State. It is Anderson's second assist of the season.

St. Mary's pulled to within one at the 87th minute mark. STMU's Rachel Gurinsky scored off a deflection to make it 3-2.

"We had a couple of other scoring opportunities that we either hit into a defender or the goalkeeper," McCorkle said. "This match could have been over earlier and we made it interesting on ourselves giving up a late goal."

The Rambelles will play at the ASU Soccer Field for the first time this season on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Dallas Baptist.

"I'm hoping we will get a lot of fans out and who want to see what this team is about," McCorkle said. "We want to see a good crowd and I hope we can feed off the crowd's energy. "
