SAN ANGELO – The No. 17 ranked Angelo State women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to six with a 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist in front of nearly 400 fans Thursday evening at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Belles (5-0-1) used three second half goals to top the Patriots (2-2-1). ASU was limited to just four shots in the first half but sent 14 towards the net in the second half. DBU was limited to nine shots and only three in the second half.
The Belles got in an early hole as DBU's Lindsey Eccles found the net on a deflection off the cross bar for a 1-0 lead in the 22
nd minute. The Belles only attempted four shots in the first half to DBU's six and went into half trailing 1-0.
"We changed systems in the second half," McCorkle said. "It provided better starting positions for our players attacking. The difference was our defensive center midfielders got forward. I felt in the first half our midfielders just hung out. They were defending first and not looking to attack. The second half was much better"Â
In the 67
th minute
Haley Mendel, the Belles leading scorer, found the net on a strike from nearly 18 yards out that screeched by the goalkeepers head for the equalizer. The Belles used the goal as a chance to swing momentum as they stepped up their defensive intensity and only allowed three shots in the second half.
"She can get the ball and beat defenders," McCorkle said of Mendel "She has an awesome shot and that was the first goal that got us going."
ASU's second goal came in the 80
th minute off a series of deflections that eventually landed on the foot of
Tiffany Dang as she tapped in the Belles second goal for a 2-1 advantage. The goal marked Dang's second on the season and the Belles fifth in the last two games.
Sierra Anderson was credited with her third assist of the season.
Three minutes later,
Demi Tsambasis flicked a ball off a deflection from Anderson. It is Tsambasis third goal of the season and Anderson's second assist of the night. Mendel was also credited for an assist on the play.
The defense stepped up after the first DBU goal and would not allow a goal in the final 68 minutes of the game.
Shantel Wittke made four saves in the game, mainly due to the high level of pressure the defenders put on DBU attackers.
The Belles will wrap up non-conference play with a match against UT-Permian Basin Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field.Â
