SAN ANGELO – The No. 17 Angelo State soccer team continued its winning ways with its sixth straight victory, by scoring the most goals in a match since 2006, defeating UTPB 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Belles (6-0-1) are unbeaten in seven matches this season and are off to the second best start in program. The best mark was last season's 10-0-1 start. The Falcons (0-6) were held to two shots for the match. The nine goals are the most under head coach
Travis McCorkle.
Â
ASU attempted 32 shots for the game, 21 of which were shots on goal. A total of seven Belles scored on the day.
Â
Senior
Sierra Anderson recorded her second career hat trick with two goals coming in the first 20 minutes of the match and her third was in the 59
th minute.
Â
Anderson scored the first two goals of the match. The first goal came in the seventh minute on a header on an assist from
Demi Tsambasis. Anderson netted her second goal in the 19
th minute off a through ball from
Shay Williams.
Â
Anderson capped the day off with her third goal in the 59
th minute that
Haley Mendel assisted. The game marked Anderson's first hat trick since the Lone Star Conference Tournament in 2014 against Eastern New Mexico.
Â
Lauren Perry added her first goal of the season. The junior took a shot from 20 yards out that was low toward the corner of the net and shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead.
Â
One of the few mistakes came in the 33
rd minute. A Belle defender passed back to the goalkeeper
Natalie Nielsen in an attempt to reset the attack but Nielsen mishandled the pass and Redwine stole the ball and scored on an empty net.
Â
Payton Shlemon got the goal back on a shot from the right side in the 42
nd minute. It is the freshman's first goal of her career at ASU.
Â
The Belles recorded 15 first half shots compared to just one for UTPB.
Â
"Honestly, the first half I wasn't very pleased," ASU head soccer coach
Travis McCorkle said. "I didn't think our possession was very good and I was disappointed. It is difficult to say that being up 4-1. We gave up that first half goal and it was an unnecessary mistake with a lack of communication in the back."
Â
Kathleen Keoughan added her first goal of the season and first of the second half off an assist from
Morgan Sibson. The junior took a shot from 25 yards out and nailed it in the left corner for the fifth goal.
Â
After Anderson's third goal,
Tiffany Dang joined the scoring off a pass from Shlemon. It is the sophomore's third goal of the season.
Â
Demi Tsambasis recorded her fourth goal of the season in the 85
th minute on a pass from
Megan Allen. Tsambasis has now scored in four straight matches for the Belles.
Â
Selena Alvarez capped off the scoring in the 87
th minute with her second goal of the season. Â
                                                           Â
"We wanted to try some different players in the back and I'm pleased with what they did overall. I would have loved to see us get the shutout but that one mistake cost us. It was great to get nine goals," McCorkle said.
Â
Nine different Belles have accounted for a goal this season as Anderson, Mendel and Tsambasis are tied for the lead on the team with four.
Â
Angelo State finishes up non-conference play leading the LSC in goals (21) assists (16) and shots (118). Anderson, Tsambasis and Mendel are also tied for second in the LSC in goals scored with four. Anderson is second in the conference in assists with four.
Â
"I still think our forwards can do better." McCorkle said. "I don't know if it will result in that many goals but our performance still has some tweaks and things we can do to improve."
Â
ASU opens up conference play at TAMU-Commerce next Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
