COMMERCE, Texas – The No. 7-ranked Angelo State women's soccer team dropped their Lone Star Conference opener on the road to Texas A&M Commerce 1-0 Friday night.
The Belles suffered their first loss of the season and fall to 6-1-1 and 0-1-0 in conference. Texas A&M-Commerce improved to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in the LSC.
"I don't think we started very well, ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I didn't think we competed very well tonight."
The lone goal came in the match was scored in the 13th minute from TAMUC's Vicky Back off a corner kick from Sarah Morris. The goal was her seventh of the season.
"I really thought we'd be up for the match, based on it being the conference opener," McCorkle said. "We always like to start off strong and for whatever reason we didn't."
The Belles outshot the Lions 12-11 and had several scoring opportunities with six shots on goal, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net. The TAMUC goalkeeper, Courtnie Northern, made six saves to prevent an ASU score.
"We got slightly better in the second half, but not enough to get a goal," McCorkle said.
Eight different Belles attempted shots including reining LSC Offensive Player of the Week Sierra Anderson taking four shots. Kathleen Keoughan added two shots while Haley Mendel, Selena Alvarez, Molly Warren, Shay Williams, Analise Watson and Cynthia Andrews each took one.
"I thought like we had a good game plan coming into this game and I just felt like we didn't execute it," McCorkle said. "Maybe there was a disconnect between the plan for the game and what we actually tried to do."
Alvarez had an opportunity to tie the game in the 90th minute but her shot fell wide of the goal.
"Tomorrow [Saturday] we'll have a light practice and hopefully start a new streak and play better on Sunday," McCorkle said.
The Belles continue the road trip at Texas Woman's University on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. TWU is 5-2-1 coming off a win versus Midwestern State.
